Hi,

I am finishing up my 2nd year in optometry and we have summer school but I want to work this summer. How do I go about finding a PT job in a practice? I want to work for an optometrist vs. clerk job at school so I can get more experience and do some networking at the same time. However, I'm not sure if cold- calling might be putting some optometrists off.
I don't want to ask the people at my college since they seem to dislike the idea of students working during school sessions.

If anyone can advise me on different ways to find a summer job, I really need it! Thank you so much in advance.

Hi, Sorry I don't have any advice to give but I was wondering if this is the first time you're going to work while attending optometry school? I'm curious if you feel that you had enough spare time during your first two years to work part time. Everyone tells me that there is no way I will have time to work but that's what they said in my pre-med program and I worked full-time pretty much the whole time.

If you've worked full time before while handling heavy course work then I think you'll be able to work part time during optometry school.
I didn't work during my first two years because my school has a very busy schedule with 2-3 exams every week so I keep having to play catch up. I wanted to work the first summer but an advisor thought it was not good idea. It turned out summer's schedule wasn't so bad, and I should have worked.
It's doable if you've done it before and have discipline, and good time management.

Try Craigslist - I have gotten 2 optometry-related jobs that way. I also got a job by just walking into an office with my resume (I already had experience in the field) and asking if they had any openings and they found a place for me. Good luck!
