how to get a realtor?

I've never had to use a realtor before, but am about to move to a new city for residency. How does one go about getting a realtor? Do you get recommendations from someone (e.g. current residents) or do you just randomly call some real estate company?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

If you have any friends/family in the neighborhoods you think you want to live in, ask them for a referal.

Realtors are not really 'city-wide' folks, at least not for larger cities. They're very localized.

You might want to get an idea of the good areas to live, and choose a couple of neighborhoods first, and then look for realtors.
