Sup y’all I have a bit of an untraditional journey. I was scheduled to graduate in spring of 2019, but dropped out of school after the fall of 2018 (second to last) semester. My mom was diagnosed with an illness around junior yr and she became extremely ill around the start of my senior year. I have 2 younger siblings, one with developmental disabilities and one that is 10 years younger than me — we needed a lot of extra help due to the nature of her illness.

I made the decision to postpone finishing college to help out. My GPA was like a 3.19 average at that point and I figured a break was my best option since I was not performing well academically anyway. I later retuned to finish my senior year until the fall of 2021. By that time my mom was doing much better, and being involved with her care ultimately sparked me to consider medicine as a career.

When I returned in Fall of 2021, I ended up taking the full year (30 credits) to repair my GPA and to take some missing med school prereqs. I officially graduated in Spring of 2022, and averaged a 3.7 GPA for the 30 or credits of my 2021-2022 school year.

Now here is my confusion. Technically, my Fall of 2018 semester and then Fall/Spring 2021-2022 semesters are all my senior year. But, I felt that my 2021-2022 addendum to my senior year was a more representative version of me as a student. I took my coursework more seriously and I felt like this was reflected in my GPA. My question is, how do I acknowledge this on my app? In the additional optional statement AMCAS has? Should I send a letter to schools? Would I be better served still taking a post-bacc despite getting a 3.7 average 30 credits of higher level science courses at a university in 2021-2022 for the rest of my senior year?

I’m deciding to apply to schools this cycle without doing a postbacc primarily because of cost and the fact that I was able to show an upward trend when I returned to finish school (though I’m sure this is just presented as one senior year gpa to adcoms?) I also took the MCAT on 4/26 and was net average of 521 on all the FLs so I’m hoping a score above a 515 on the real thing will be a boon to my app as well.

Any insight on how to handle this is very appreciated..

Love and peace!!

Check out the secondary essay prompts if they give you a space to talk about additional context about your application, especially your academic record. You could consider the AMCAS Other Impactful Experiences if 1325 characters is enough.

If you intend to apply for 2026 entry this coming month, you might as well post a WAMC profile.
