i saw a thread on here that residents are going to have to work days straight like back in the ****ty old days because a bunch of old people wanted to torture new doctors.

Like, how is this even fair? I'm worried about having kids. I want to have 4 kids before residency is over, all a year apart, and idk how im supposed to do that if I can't leave the hospital ever....

They aren't going to make Derm residents work this hard right? The slave hours are just for people who couldn't match outside of primary care or want to be rich surgeons in the future and stuff right???

Four children in 4 years is ambitious, and pretty unrealistic for even a "normal" profession.

I suggest you take a deeper look at the duty hour restrictions. I'm too lazy to rehash those arguments here, but you'll notice a trend: preclinical medical students are freaking out, ms3/4 are apathetic, most residents are happy about it.

80 hour work weeks restrictions are still a thing. hours on call are the only thing that changed. When duty hours were first restricted it was thought that would decrease certain medical errors. Since restriction started the errors have remained unchanged or increased. This is thought to be due to increased patient hand-offs, among other things.

Short version: chill. It'll be fine. You're working the same total number of hours, but less total days (increased recovery time).

If youre a woman I would rethink the strategy of punishing your body like that. There are recommended recovery times after labor. Not to mention how tough it is to have a young child in the field (I do. Sleep is rough, tantrums and chasing after them is draining after a full day). I thought I wanted 4 kids. I'm struggling to justify 2 now.

If you're a male, I would rethink your strategy for a number of reasons...

One child a year is an urealistic timeline anyhow. If I recall the average time for a couple to conceive is ~6months.

If you're dying to have children, don't wait. There is never a "good" time. Just live your life. It won't get easier in residency.

You will never get these 3 minutes of your life back.

Lol. It's equally written for others who have similar questions. Not uncommon themes/concerns/gripes around here.

My other flaw was reading comprehension... I skimmed that last paragraph where things really got fun.

I dunno...back in the day (or on Grey's Anatomy), you could always find a spare closet or amphitheater to do your business. You just aren't thinking this through.

There is the flaw in your reasoning. You are imagining a monogamous couple making babies at the rate of one a year. That is a hard pace to keep up, but reality demonstrates that this is not the only means of mass producing off-spring.

I think the troll can pull it off. Either via staggered baby mommas if male, or possibly employed surrogates if female. As a future derm, money is no object, right?

Can someone explain why on Earth a person would actually want to have that many children? I mean, I get why people would want to have kids, maybe even 3 or 4. But why do the people who have 5 or 6 or more kids want that many kids? I mean, don't people start to feel a little irresponsible at some point when they can't give each kid the proper attention they need?

I want at least 10 kids, because I figure the top 3 or 4 will dominate the others and become the most superior. It's a way of making them stronger. Survival of the fittest.

What happens to the other 6? 😕

Uh....it's not going to be that bad. They are making changes for interns. IIRC, everyone else has the same duty hours. It can work, if you like to get busy and freaky, and get some good babysitters. I'm assuming the daddy is ok with having 4 kids...cause having 4 dads for 4 kids is not fun!!!

I'm a nontraditional student planning to apply in a couple of years. I graduated already and have been working in a software company. I've been making loads of money and I graduated with no debt from undergrad because I finished high school with lots of credits for college. I have enough saved that I won't have to worry about paying for medical school.

My question is: how many students are married by third year of medical school? And is it true that med students come mostly from rich families? I've met a lot of guys in tech but they are all a bunch of weirdos.

Thanks!

Against all odds,
streampaw

I really just want a nice guy who wants to have lots of kids and will match into a lifestyle specialty. I'm only interested in derm and want to have 4 kids before residency is over (biological clock and everything!!!) so we both need to have enough time off to help take care of them.

I think I'm Ok in attractiveness, the brogrammers back in college and at work won't leave me alone *eyeroll*.

Lol... The OP is still pre-med, with the goal to apply to med school in "a couple of years," marry a rich guy whom like her will pursue a lifestyle residency so they can have 4 kids while in residency.

Only in 'Merica and Papua New Guinea the only countries in the world without paid parental leave. Now that's not an April Fools Day joke unfortunately.

That's not true at all. I got paid paternity leave. In residency no less. I know that my female counterparts got even more.

Banned in <48 hours this time. 'twas fun wall it lasted.

(And sad, because this actually could've been an interesting conversation about when to have kids during training if it wasn't a troll thread).

Any Streampaw thread was meant to be a troll thread, but hopefully we will have plenty of opportunities to discuss this later.
