How to join an insurance panel

Forgive me if this has already been covered, but what are the basics to finding and joining insurance panels?

I live in Northern California, and am curious to start the application process. After perusing the web and specific insurance companys' websites, it has not become obvious....

1) don't bother with looking on their websites: call them up. it is far easier.

2) if you are really on your post doc year as per your profile, there are not going to be any panels that will take you. most require 3-5 years post licensure.

3) the application process tkaes several month.
