Hello!

Thanks for reading guys! I'm currently an M2 on a shortened preclinical who is taking a year off of medical school. I took the time off because of personal reasons including burn out as well as family problems (parents nearly got a divorce). I spent the past two months sorting out my problems and feel much better and am trying to be as positive as I can be for the upcoming year. I have PASSED every course I have taken thus far in medical school, with zero remediation.

I am currently applying to research at my school as I am interested in conducting clinical research and exploring that realm. However if I get the research I cannot do research for the entire year. I have to take off about 4-5 months at the end of the year to sit back down and re-study for Step 1.

I did not fail Step 1, but unfortunately at my school there are no leave of absences just withdraws. When I am withdrawn I cannot sit for Step 1, so I have to make do with the current situation and restudy for the exam at the end of this year.

I realize this is quite a predicament, but I was originally not shooting for a competitive specialty, and my interests were a mix of internal, psych/neuro, family med, and PM&R. I am just worried how bad this will look come residency. If this absolutely sinks my application, I would be very concerned going forwards.

Speaking to my dean, she reassured me that many people do take time off at my school (top 30 allo) and that most of them don't do anything on the year off but recover, and every single student she knew who did this came back and graduated and matched. There was one exception, but that student first sat for Step 1, failed it, then decided to take time off.

Just curious if you all have any insight to offer! Thanks!
