Unusual request for advice. Please, senior students/residents, do respond. Your thoughts will be accepted and processed and appreciated. I do not what specialty to choose. I've been thinking a lot lately. I notice that I would not be a good candidate for certain specialties because of personality defects. But a lot of specialties are still open to me if I excell on step1 and do not aim for certain elite programs or cities. But here lies the proglem. I like a certain type of woman. You will not find this type in a hospital. And quite a few residencies limit your dating pool to people working at the hospital. Right now my med school is located in such a locale. So I spend a lot of time agonizing about my plight of having to study pathology that most residents do not remember and having no prospects of "having fun". I mean I do participate in some enjoyable activities when I do not have to study. I think my school offers me plenty of opportunities to succeed in my studies. But I think I want to do my residency in Miami or LA so I could actually engage in serious relationships. It is realistic to match IM in miami or LA obviously. But anesthesia much less likely... So would it be a bad idea to limit myself to primary care? If I were passionate about primary care it would be a no-brainer. But the only plus that I see in primary care is "job stability". I could see myself in some subspecialties of IM if I actually became good at physical exam. But I do not think I have what it takes to do research and to keep striving for those fellowships all while working my full-time job as an IM resident.

What year are you? It sounds like you're an MS-2 at most.

If you are, relax. Do your 3rd year rotations and see if there's anything that jumps out at you.

People who are deadset on a certain profession prior to 3rd year clerkships are missing out on some opportunities.
