So I’ve been doing some research in an REU this summer and our program has been encouraging us to find conferences and try to present at them. I would love to, but I don’t know where to get started. Where can I find a list of conferences? What is the general application process? How much research do I need to have done to actually present? I’d love to hear any advice

Which conference you’d present would depend on your field of research. You should talk to your PI or mentors for ideas.

Most "associations" hold meetings at which investigators make presentations. Some large groups have regional, state or local organizations as well and they may offer an event at which research is presented. One starts by writing an abstract that describes briefly the Research problem: Methods, Results. Discussion. These are submitted about 6 months in advance of the meeting date. The committee choosing which projects will be submitted notify applicants about 3 months before the event and then you flesh out your paper for a presentation (10 -20 minutes) or as a poster presentation.

Your PI should know of the groups that most often accept papers in the PI's discipline.

For example, here's a link to the American Society for Microbiology listing of up-coming meetings.
