Some schools won't accept email. I tried to turn down and they wanted me to send back the official form that I recieved with my acceptance letter. So I guess it depends on the school. I'm assuming a phone call would always work though

My schools included a "how to decline" section in my packet/email.

They will just need some sort of paper/electronic trail that they can refer to in the future. Email worked fine for me.

pretty sure to avoid future interviews an email is necessary to withdraw your application, not sure about schools that already accepted you. call them and find out, just be sure to thank them for the opportunity.
