I will be shadowing 2 dentists in 3 weeks, will be working at my parents dental lab as a dental lab technician and maybe volunteer work?(if schedule permits)
How would i record all these hours?
I also plan on carrying a notebook to record experience at both clinics, but are my notes only useful when I get questioned at a dental interview(which wont happen for another 1.5 years) for my procedures?

i think everything is based on an honor code. whatever you write down will be accepted as honest information. But they could always call the dentist you shadowed and ask them to verify the stated # hours.

this is usually not an important part of the application. from what I heard they neglect the hours and just heed to the fact that u actuallly shadowed a dentist. nothing more nothing less.

Some schools require the dentist LOR to include the hours (Tufts comes to mind). Others in their Secondary asks for the contact information of the dentists you shadowed (Michigan off the top of my head).

Aside from those select few schools, just keep track of your hours yourself. When you do your AADSAS application, just tally up all your hours and fill it in. They won't ask for any proof. Unless something seems really off, they will believe you. As funkyCHICKEN has mentioned, it is more to show the schools that you have a general perspective of the field of dentistry before applying so you know what you are getting yourself into more than anything. IMO, the hours don't really matter to the school (as long as you meet their minimum), but the types of specialty dentists that you shadow does. That is to say, they don't want you to just shadow a GP for 200 hours. Or just an OMFS for 100 hours.

Are volunteer hours not highly recommended? I am getting close to starting shadowing and am trying to figure out how I will squeeze in volunteering with work, shadowing and class!

This is wrong. Some schools have minimum shadowing hours requirements.

I find this really unsettling... Honor code in a competitive pool in days like this just does not exist. And they can't even call... I mean do you know how many Dr. Smith's or Dr. Kim's there are in a city like Toronto? Never mind the larger, more populated cities like Chicago or LA (literally there's hundreds of Dr. Kim's in LA)

Do you know how many calls they would have to make? But I agree, they should at least ask for an address and phone even if they aren't going to call.

Or they will expect competence in discussing common procedures one would see.
