How to request program info

Has anyone been requesting additional information than is on program's websites? How have you been doing it? Can one just email the contact and ask if they will send more information? Or will they just tell you to look at their websites?

I sent post-cards to programs I was interested in receiving more information from and filed a 3x5 card with the request info on it, as a quasi-tracking system. Some programs sent cards stating that all the information was available on the web-site, etc. You can call for information as well, or email if the program provides that information.
