I just tried to download what I "think" is the free usmle practice test online.
http://www.usmle.org/Orientation/2009/menu.html

anyway, I have a macbook, I downloaded it and now can't open it. I have this fred.exe file on my desktop and it doesn't know how to open it. Am I doing something wrong here?

you won't be able to install / run the program via OS X. anything with *.exe is made for a windows operating system. if you have parallels or bootcamp, you can boot up windows and download and install the file there.
