Hi, buddies,

Here I try to understand the process of PGY1 anes positions. Say if I get interview from a program offering both PGY1/CA1 anes positions, and I also apply for the prelim/transitional program in the same school, but I were rejected from both 1st year programs, will the anes program still considers me for PGY1 position or I have to go with CA1 position and try to get my first year in other schools?

I am a little worried because I only get one prelim call. How should I act more proactively to secure a prelim position? Is there a way to "persuade" them to issue an interview since I've got the anes interview in the same school?

Thanks

Here's how it works. Categorical programs include all 4 years. Advanced programs only include 3--you have to come up with a prelim year. When you make your rank order list, if you list an advanced program, a second list will appear for you to rank your prelim programs. You can have several different rank lists of prelim programs and tailor them to suit your needs.

In general, it is possible to scramble into a prelim position somewhere. It may not be a particularly good one, and it may not be in the location of your choice, which may necessitate moving once to your internship and a second time to your anesthesia residency.

The advanced anesthesia programs are separate from the prelim programs, and if you don't get interviewed for a prelim spot, it is still possible to interview at that place for a CA1 spot and end up matching there, but you will have to come up with a prelim position.

If you've got anesthesia interviews at a place where you've applied for a prelim year, you can give them a call and see if they can interview you at the same time.

Thanks. Who should I talk to, the program coordinator or the director of prelim/TY? How should I phrase it to be less blatant?

Prelim invites typically come out later in the season that the anesthesia invites - huge variation. Dont worry about prelim year, just do 5 or so interviews, at least a couple being either medicine or surgery and you'll almost certainly match. If a transitional yr is important to you, you might have to go on a few more interviews.
