I am going to go to DO school in the fall. I am interested in Anesthesiology, and wanted to know if there is anything i can do extra beside do well in school that i can do to beef up my app. What do Residency directors look for in applicant beside boards scores or grades. Do they look at any thing else or is that about it?

How difficulty is it to get anesthesiology as a DO? I go to a fairly new school (Touro NY) would that effect me? I am kind of worried about my school's newness.

Any suggestions will be helpful.

PDs have to make sure you will pass the boards and be a good advocate for their program when you continue in academics, private practice, fellowships, etc. thus the strong importance on boards and grades....these two things are the most important. so don't sacrifice either of these to "pump up" the rest of your application. that said a few programs offer summer anesthesiology rotations -- henry ford is one i know of... check with a few programs in your area or the area that you are interested in and ask...these things can only help. as a DO (me to), you probably don't have an anesthesiology dept heavy in research -- in NY there are lots of programs....try to get hooked up with someone doing some research there if you feel like you need to pump your app. but i repeat, don't let the other stuff slide.... i matched at my number one with none of this extra stuff....
