I am thinking of starting my step1 studies this summer. Any texts/review books I should master to prepare for those "question banks" that everyone is doing in the 2nd semester of 2nd year? Would it be a good idea to go over BRS physio and BRS anatomy and BRS behavior this summer?

so you just finished first year?

most of what you're going to need to study is related to path and pharm, which would be useless to begin studying if you haven't had the course. you shouldn't really need brushing up on the courses you just finished at this point, and anatomy and behavioral are very low yield for Step imo. You'll get a lot of physio review as you study path.

if practically all med students are fine studying the semester before the exam, why do you feel the need to start a year early?

I'm an MS2 studying for Step 1. The one thing you truly get a single crack at during first year is biochemistry. It was taught with zero clinical perspective at my school, and I wish I'd gone over it during the summer after MS1 to learn all of the relevant pathways better and to understand the diseases better. So I'd suggest that maybe you should go over that.

You'll get tons of physiology during 2nd year, so all of the relevant points will be reviewed. You could review anatomy, but I'm betting you'll just forget it again come exam time.

Sounds like we went to a similar school. It is very frustrating having to learn this on your own

the summer between ms1 and ms2, the best subjects to study are to review biochemistry and look at immunology, microbiology, and hematology. There is no point reviewing physiology, as you will be swarmed with physiology during pathophys.

Also to get your hands on Kaplan MedEssentials and first aid if you havent done so all ready would be a smart idea.

Yup. I read through a smattering of biochem chapters in RR Biochem the 2 days before MS2 started and was pleasantly surprised to find out that the stuff I reviewed kept coming up throughout the year (esp. for heme/metabolism/DM). Would highly recommend.

Biochem and do a lot of research and get publications is the best advice I can for that summer

Thank you. I should definitely look into biochem since we covered it but not completely.. Micro/Immuno we did not even start.

Could use some sam500 insight in this thread.

I would recommend having a clear understanding of biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology and pathology. Physiology and pathology come hand in hand, really.
All the best!
