How to take step 2 early

Please enlighten me, I'm sorry if this is a stupid question. My school is not that great at explaining things.

If I want residencies to see my score BEFORE I interview, when is the latest I can take step 2?

I understand that eras opens sep 1st, and it's recommended that students submit their applications soon. However, LOR's are not due until October. So does that mean I should choose my date 3-4 weeks prior to submitting my application (September), or when my application will be complete (October).
