I have the wonderful problem of multiple acceptances and have decided that I am going to U of Iowa (go Hawkeyes!!), and I was wondering how to properly turn down acceptances to other schools. Is an email sufficient or should I call them?

A letter saying, sorry there were many excellent medical schools offering to accept you and this years pool was very competitive with location, and financial aid. unfotunately, you won't be going to their medical school since it did not make it to the top. However, they shouldn;t be worried, many other student would be happy to settle wth them.

don't hurt their feelings by calling.. how would u feel if they rejected u by phone call?

what I did:

1) Call. They REALLY don't take it personally.
2) Send an email so they have it on record.
3) Sit back and have an ego for a few moments over what you were just able to do. Then drop the ego, everyone hates it.

This is hilarious!!!

I wonder if the admissions people would be amused by the irony... if it was me, I'd die laughing.

This is all you need. You usually get an email back saying "thank you". Other steps are optional.

I recommend going with Vickpick's idea.

Make sure to add, "It's not you, it's me."

lol.. just proof read what I wrote, and send it as an email.
I'm sure you'll get a reply, "Thank you for letting us know. I'm having a hard time breathing after the good laugh, but I shall survive."

This is excellent, I have gotten many of these, so I think that it would be great to get to send one myself!

The letter will have to include "... However, I regret to inform you ..." and "don't think this is a reflection on you're ability to be a great medical school"

I encourage you do this!!! Try it out and see if some admissions official posts the anecdote on IMMD!

Don't forget to throw in something about the increase in number of qualified medical schools this year.

Dear Mr. School of Medicine,

I, HoboDeEsquiar, have completed my review of your acceptance offer, together with all supporting documents in your mailed packet.

Unfortunately, I am not able to accept a position from the School of Medicine for the coming year. It is my very sincere hope that your extensive interest in and intensive preparation for filling a full class of students for medical education be fully realized in other students or candidates.

I appreciate your interest in my membership in your School and I give you my personal best wishes for success in your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

HoboDeEsquiar,
Other School of Medicine, Class of 2014.

Also add, "I do, however, reserve the right to transfer to your school if it is needed later on during my educational career. If for some reason the current school revokes my acceptance I will contact you to see if a position remains open for me at your institution." to see what they say.

Personal experience has taught me that A) they really don't care so have fun like you see above and B) if you call, they'll ask you to send an email anyways, so save yourself trouble, unless you've the gall to tell them ^ over the phone.

For the schools that DO use the phone to inform you...

Why not say expect a phone call Thursday if I've decided to go to your school, and then let them wait by the phone

Here is the letter that I sent

To whom it may concern,

I have completed my review of your acceptance offer, together with all supporting documents in your mailed packet.

Unfortunately, I regret to inform you that I am not able to accept a position at St. Louis University for the coming year as I have been accepted to one of my top choice schools. This year's pool was very competitive with location, curricula and financial aid, and I don't want you to think that this is a reflection on you're ability to be a great medical school. It is my sincere hope that your extensive interest in and intensive preparation for filling a full class of students for medical education be fully realized in other students or candidates.

I thank you for your interest in my membership in your school, and I give you my personal best wishes for success in your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

My name

I REALLY want to put in a line:

"my decision in no way reflects upon your future potential as a medical school"

Brilliant!

I bet they've received these before. I've seen this come up on SDN at least 4 or 5 times every year, there's no way other applicants haven't tried it either. I wonder how they felt when they received the first one though...

Interestingly I've just been rejected from SLU!

This was the email i got back...

Dear Mr. Hobo,

We have received your withdrawal from Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Your $100 tuition deposit check has been requested and will be forwarded to you within 2-3 weeks.

We wish you luck in all your future endeavors.

This looks like a form letter, but I do think that it's interesting that they used the same wording at the end as me.

Or it's just an overused phrase.

🤣 this thread is hilarious! i personally will be sending a "thank you for the opportunity" simple email and will not give a reason as to why i chose one school over another. but  to the OP's letter!!

 Whether or not it's new to the school, it was new to me, and definitely worth the read! Awesome choice, hobo!
