How to Use Notepad?

Hi everyone! might be a pretty dumb question but how do i use Notepad. I have to transfer my personal statement to text-only and wanted to know specifics.
My original doc was in MS Word and i copied it to Notepad but in notepad it showed up as just about five extremely long horizontal lines (sentences). Is this the way it is supposed to look? How do i do a word/character count?

PS never used notepad before.

Yeah they suggest it, I didnt use it. It was not needed. I put mine right from word into the statement box. Looked it over and printed it, there were 0 errors.

Of course this might not happen all the time.

turn on word wrap. (under format)

The feature is optional in wordpad and always turned on w/ other applications.

if you write your document in word, then press ctrl+A to select the entire document, and then copy it (ctrl+C or right-click and copy) and then paste it (ctrl+V or right-click, paste) into the PS field, there should be no problems. Then you can go in and take care of residual stuff like tabs and paragraph spaces.
