Hii

can a day in medical college classroom be spent without laptop?

I have a dell laptop that I bought in 2004 and works very well but is very heavy to carry around.

If laptop is not needed in the classroom, i don't wanna buy a new one.

What about tabletpc? can u write as fast as you can with your hand?

shall i continue using the one I have or buy tabletpc?

is it worth doing it?

Depends on the school/curriculum and some will require you have one. I'm still using the laptop I got a couple years ago. Doesn't need to be the latest and greatest, as long it can get on the internet, and run things such as word, powerpoint, and email programs it should be fine.

I don't think a day goes by that I don't use mine. Checking notes, reviewing powerpoint slides, checking email, looking something up on the interweb, goofing around online, etc...

Depends on your school, but you can survive without a laptop. I don't think you'd want to though as it can be inconvenient to have to travel to a computer lab or home to print out stuff or to access materials needed for class and study.

One thing that's important in medical school is organizing your time effectively and keeping up with changes to the class schedule and everything expected of you. Having a laptop with you at all times can help with this.

I'd recommend getting a tablet PC as you can write directly on powerpoint slides, and forgo printint out slides to take to class. I'd recommend investing the money in the tablet pc. As everyone says, what's $2000 when compared to the $250k in debt you're gonna be in. LOL

any *durable* quality tabs out there? I'm on a budget (aren't we all) but I'm going to state school so anything reasonable should be fine.

Hey MDPride, where are you going to school? PM me if you don't want to post it.

I agree it depends on the school. Some schools require you to purchase a specific model with specific software uploaded through them, so I wouldn't purchase anything until you know where you are going to attend. Many schools have all their exams on computer, some do various "labs" online, and many have the notesets, lectures, etc available via computer so yes, this may well be a necessity for med school at many schools.

It depends on what brand of computer your IS department will repair in-house. At my school, they only repair Dell computers. If you have another brand of computer, you are out of luck and have to deal with the manufacturer directly. It's kinda nice that I can drop off my computer on campus, get a loaner computer, have the computer repaired at school, and pick it up a few days later. Other people in my class with non-Dell computers have to travel to a repair shop somewhere and waste all kinds of time. As with everything, it depends on your particular school.

This is HUGE. When you decide where you're going see if they recommend or have on-site service for any specific brand and go that route. If not then see if there's a local service center or something around there and just go with a decent brand name laptop that you can get serviced locally.

We have a handful of students with tablets and they were definitely cool. Mine is just a regular Dell laptop, but using OneNote I can still type notes on top of powerpoint lectures. Only been a few times that it would have been handy to actually be able to write on the screen like a tablet, but nothing you can't live without, personal preference.

Just get a size that you will be comfortable lugging around. Don't think I'll ever go with something larger than a 14" screen.

lenovo x61. look no further.

It depends though. I was gun-ho on my tablet when I got it. Now for the life of me I cannot remember when was the last time I used it in tablet mode. But they're sleek nonetheless 👍 And can be very handy at times!

I just hate that mine overheats so much!!!! And sadly I've realized that I still like having the books/printed stuff in front on me, old-school 🙄

Can't you turn up the fans? I'm sure there is some utility to increase the basal fan speeds.

I have no idea how to do that 😕 And it scares me to mess with the BIOS. Supossedly the heating problem had to do with the MB so Fujitsu replaced it but it still heats up. So I have a fan right next to it, it's pretty annoying. Some people suggested buying one of those laptop pads with fans but I never got to that (maybe I should...). I guess that for my next computer I'll stay with the mainstream brands (I'm infatuated with the Sony Vaio 😍)

Here's what you need...

Targus Notebook Cooling Mobile X Stand on Newegg. In general the ones with the fans don't last too long. This stand is a long term solution. It's not going to work unless you are on a hard surface... So if you ever find yourself using the notebook on your bed you should get a lap rest that you can put the stand on then put the notebook on that. My fiancée does that and she loves it.

I guess it depends on how much desk space there is at the med school I'm going to, but what do people think about getting a Macbook and a Wacom tablet.

I really want a tablet, but I really want a Mac, so i figure this solves the problem, but I just don't know if that will make for too much stuff all over my desk.

Guess I could go Mac on the desk and tablet in the lap?

This is an option.

Yeah, I've seen that before, but I don't want a slate style tablet, I want to have a keyboard. I also don't trust ordering one of those without being able to try it out and talk to someone in person.

Make sure you really want a tablet first. I don't see much value in it personally, but maybe that's how you take notes. Why not start the semester without it and see if it would be useful?
