hi all, great resource here, my name is Mark and I will be applying to D school this year and I have a few questions. I graduated a year ago from Stanford (3.5 / 3.4 science). I just took my DAT and I got 19 AA 21 PAT and 19 Sci. I have some shadowing experience and a LOR from the dentist (pedo) I shadowed.

My question is, throughout the last 3 years, I've been an adult-entertainment (yes porn) performer, independent while I was in college and when I graduated I signed on full time with Vivid since they gave me an offer. I'm wondering how to best present this in my application?? I thought about leaving it out all together but then I really didn't do anything else noteworthy in the year since I graduated. What do you guys think?

Also, I changed my name when I signed my contract, but all of my transcripts and school papers are under my old name, should I apply with both names?

Don't mention it. Why in God's name would you even consider mentioning that?

HOW WILL AD COMS VIEW YOUR BACKGROUND - 'hard' to say

there will be 'stiff' competition this year, so here is my advice:

KEEP THIS INFORMATION TO YOURSELF

DELETE THIS POST ASAP

I ALLREADY KNOW ABOUT YOUR PAST - THAT IS ONE TOO MANY PEOPLE

DELETE YOUR POST!!! - DON'T MENTION YOUR PAST AGAIN - AND NOT EVEN ON THE AADSAS APPLICATION!!!

Hmm, well, because it's basically one of the only non-school things I have much experience in. It's something that has taught me a lot... and the source of how I began to start considering dentistry... From what I've read here it seems that at the interviews that's a common question they ask, I guess I can make something up but I dont' think it will be as convincing... I mean, if I were THAT good of an actor, I'd have a contract with Dreamworks, not Vivid

Wow, you are one unique applicant. Stanford graduate porn guy?
I wish you are my classmate though. 😉 jk

Mark, are you just pulling our legs? I just cannot believe you can even consider mentioning that... Don't mention it to the admission. They are uptight middle-aged doctors.

Please explain how porn acting inspired you to become a dentist.

Uptight middle-aged doctors such as adcoms are just the type of men who partake in adult entertainment.

maybe you should try out for comedy and not dentistry

On a serious note - People have advised me on this forum to turn negative experiences during college into 'positives'. Now how the (beep) are you going to turn a 'side-way hammer pound' or a 'rear entry power driver' into 'postive'?

Here me out - there are things I've done prior to the application process that I won't mention because they do not help my chances of gaining admitance into dental school! Being in the adult entertainment industry will not be taken lightly by old, conservative, ad coms!

LEAVE IT OUT

I'm sure you can think of SOMETHING worth saying - think about it longer...

No doubt but I doubt they are stupid enough to openly admit their interest in adult entertainment for admission process.

I guess at times I don't realize that there are so many people who frown upon the profession.... I grew up in Van Nuys and being the porn capital of the world I guess it's just collectively engrained... I got into it when Stanford got really expensive, I took more than 4 years.

Well, when I was little I've always thought it'd be cool to go into the healthcare profession. The dentistry came when I was in India. I met a older dentist at a bar from the US who spends 6 months a year there more or less treating patients for free. Esp. amongst the displaced villagers or the marginalized urbaners who really are in destitute situations. He was just an all around congenial jolly fella who worked out of some rented 1 room office-shanty assisted by people that he had treated... we just got to chatting a lot and he said how much he liked making so many people who had lived with toothaches for so long feel better, and usually he didn't charge anything but still many of the really awfully poor people would come by with some trinket or steaming bowl of soup and etc... and that while he was a dentist in the US it allowed him to take care of his kids... I hung out with him a lot and talkign to him and assisting him in his cramped mosquito-filled "dental office" was very moving and inspirational. Then I started to research dentistry more deeply and decided to just apply and see what happens....

I guess I just sort of assumed that every "old doctor" type would be accepting since he was so chill and relaxed about my career.

I live in Torrance and durign the day I'm in Van Nuys, if any pre-dents are in the area and want to get together for some coffee or something, PM me, I always like meeting new people.

Can anyone whose gone through the applications process already tell me some schools to apply to? Or specifically schools with pretty open-minded adcoms? I checked off UCLA / USC / Arizona / UNLV on my aadsas.. would like to add a few more...

Mark, your story was quite unique that I had difficult time believing it. But you sound like you are sincere. I don't know where Van Nuys but I guess it is the capital of porn industry?

I personally don't care if you are porn star or not. More power to you. I bet many dentists are open minded but they will not put porn magazines in their waiting room.

I told you not to tell your profession because a Columbia U professor told us a story that some people send a swimming suite picture for admission but he advised us not to do that. If a swimming suite picture is not take well with adcoms, I doubt that your profession will be.

You have to realize that we all have our crazy side but once you enter professional business world, you have to play the conservative role.
If you are serious about dentistry, you know what you have to do. 😉

I think it's a really really smart idea to write about being a porno star in your essay. It's just common sense. The adcoms will definitely find you very intriguing and won't frown upon that at all. I mean, who wouldn't have a problem with thir dentist being a porn star, certianly not parents with young childen. Yeah totally you've got to write all about it. Put some pictures too, the adcoms are not uptight or snobby at all, they'll totally accept you! good luck man.

Just don't squint too much during your interview, they might recognize who you are... 😉
