How will admissions view this? If I went from a C+/B- average here to a B+/A- average. I then took lots of classes at other universities and got a A-/A average there.

I wish I started at a B+/A- average, but I think I'll cap.

Will be difficult applying with 3.5 gpa or lower

An upward grade trend is generally noticed. Some schools even weight the later years more. Hopefully, the improvement happened in time to result in a generally competitive cGPA.

So the school doesn't matter? I know there is some debate, but I'm doing pretty bad here.

If you got poor grades at a 4 years university then transfered to a community college to improve your grades: yes it will be noticed (negatively, because it makes it seem like you cannot handle rigorous coursework).

Otherwise, your school doesn't matter, no.

When I interviewed at JHU, the majority of the interviewees were from Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, etc. Perhaps school does matter.

Obviously yes, but only if you're applying to mostly research heavy schools like HMS or JHU etc.

I won't transfer, but I think the best grades I can get this semester are A-s/B+s, hoping to improve next year.

I have a friend at JHU who didn't attend any of these institutions.

Perhaps people from those schools had better MCAT + GPA. They had amazing SAT + GPA to get accepted to those places back in high school, so the track record is certainly there.

Doing well and rising trends are always noted. People like underdogs and reinvention. Doing well at a school that's a known feeder school for a med school is especially noted, say, like at the SUNY UG schools for the SUNY and other NY med schools.

In our Adcom discussions, doing "OK" or "avg" at a rigorous school might bump a borderline candidate from wait list to accept. But I'll take a guy with a 3.9 from Kutztown State over a Harvard guy with a 3.01.

@Goro uses "Kutztown." @LizzyM uses "Podunk." What do you use, @gyngyn?

It would end my anonymity, sorry.
Oh, so you actually use the name of an actual place? I thought it would be something like "Awkcity" lol
