I was wondering if i should include that I am a Subway restaurant owner in my application. How would adcoms look at this? Although I am an absent owner (because of school,) I do take care of the administrative paperwork and other small things. I am only 19 years old so I am not sure if they would look at this positively or negatively.

probably positively since thats pretty damn unique, good luck

Right. I'd list it, as it is unique, and shows some real life responsibility. You're going to have to be ready for the "why medicine instead of business?" question though.

Someone asked the same thing a long time ago and everyone, including me, said it was a great way to stand out and demonstrate your leadership abilities.

Great job btw!

Wow that sounds amazing to own your own business at that age! I think it would also demonstrate maturity and responsibility. 🙂

I was ruminating more on this:

I still think you should list it, but definitely be ready for questions about it. Not to imply anything in your case, but if a 19 year old comes up to me telling me he owns a business, I (and adcoms likely too) are going to have some questions - because it's unusual.

I'd find it hard to believe, for example, that in high school you went out and found a bunch of investors or raised the money working as a lifeguard to open up a Subway franchise. Again, not implying that you didn't - it's just that it's unusual that you could. So if it's the kind of thing where you "own" it as a gift from your dad or something, I'd undersell your position rather than overstate.

But again, it's quite possible that you really own this building and would have great answers for all my questions, in which case it's a win-win-win writing it down.

How did you get the money to start/buy the franchise? Or was it willed to you or anything like that?

I like Subway's new seafood sandwich, although there is a tad too much dressing (or is it mayonnaise?)

I love their Turkey Breast Sandwich. But I don't find a footlong very satisfying. I usually need like a foot and a half before I feel full.

I would only list it if you acquired the business on your own and without the help of you parents. I am just taking a wild guess that you are actually a part owner with your parents, which if that is the case, you are just going to come off as spoiled and it is going to be a negative rather than a positive.

The meatball sandwich is the only thing I'll eat at Subway. Togo's for the win!

so obviously a typical 19 year old does not have the money to buy a subway franchisee. My parents did help me open it, they paid the down payment and the rest i took out in loans; with them as my co-signers. When I think of my subway though, I feel its my hard work, blood, sweat and tears. I went to the two weeks training, i do the payroll, i learned the computer paperwork, I did EVERYTHING. I am wokring to make the business successful, my parents are only there for support and i have not asked them for any since.

P.S: that seaford is ALL mayonnaise, every subway puts a different amount of mayo in it (it should be standardized.)

I'd mention it. I think premeds are way too judgemental and I see nothing negative about this.

I agree, definitely include it!

As to the mayonnaise, perhaps you could try a low-fat version?

Also, did that Jared (Jarod?) fellow eat Subway's meatball sub and oven-baked cookies while on his diet, because it's not working for me.

Very insightful point.

I would ask you to bring samples to your interview.

All kidding aside, I really can't fathom why you would think any adcom would see owning a Subway as a negative. It is a tremendous accomplishment, since the typical 19-year-old is more commonly to be found behind the counter making the sandwiches rather than in the back office making the payroll. You might want to discuss what made you decide to open a Subway franchise on your app. It would definitely be the kind of thing you'd get asked about a lot at interviews. Best of luck with your apps. 🙂
