tell ur bf/gf to f*** off.....dentists are DOCTORS everybody!!....D.D.S. stands for DOCTOR of DENTAL SURGERY......
if ur significant other cant get that into their head......meet someone more on your wavelength (and when i say more on...i mean *****....)......
One other issue to present to all here.....dentists are quickly becoming the first line of defense in finding many systemic health issues and are an integral part of the DOCTOR network....dentists are no longer solely responsible for oral health care....they are responsible for systemic health care....(like a physician).
OP....ur not having an inferiority complex.....u have a right to feel this way...its insulting to have someone who seems ignorant demeaning you.....

people are comparing different things here. Like most people are saying, the word "doctor" has (at least) two meanings

OP's bf: Dentists are not Doctors
OP: Dentists are Doctors

OP's bf was referring to "Medical Physcians"
OP was referring to the "Doctor" title

The argument afterward became pointless; you can't argue to compare two different items

I would say, "yeah, dentists are not doctors".
(and i am referring to the occupation as it's the common interpretation). They are two very different occupations.

Oh man I never thought I'd get as many replies as I did. But thanks again for the replies. Some posts were really funny. But let me just clarify that not once did I ever think dental school is tougher to get into than medical school. It may be the same difficulty, maybe more or maybe less? But I would never know because I am not applying to med school. I don't have that preconception (as someone stated) and I could honestly careless which one is harder to get into.

And I'm not trying to be a dentist because of the title, I just really like everything about dentistry and I couldn't see myself pursuing a career in anything else.

I just felt insulted by what my boyfriend said, that is all. I never brag that I'm going to be a dentist.

Furthermore... you don't here lawyers and attorneys bitc*ing that they aren't called doctors... yet they still qualify with a JD. Lawyers are lawyers, chiropractors are chiropractors, psychologists are psychologists, professors are professors, dentists are dentists, and yep you guessed it... doctors are doctors.

Except that you guessed it wrong:.... physicians are physicians.

Let me take this to another level... I want all dental hopefuls to feel good about their career choice. A dentist can be considered a doctor, but a doctor can't be considered a dentist :: a square is a rectangle but a rectangle isn't a square. Dentisty = WIN
