I wish to badly study dentistry at Howard University. Please let me know if by taking my predental courses at this university will increase my chances for admission.

Does Howard University has a early deciosion program for dentistry?

Go to their website. I believe that have a BS/DDS combined degree which you can complete in 7 years. Are you an undergraduate now or in high school? You would have to be an undergraduate at Howard for the combined degree program.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I graduated from HU (2009) as predental student. Though they do have the BS/DDS program, it is extremely hard to get into, and even harder to matriculate into dental school...I believe maybe 2 students did out of 10 did when I was there.

I was active as a predental student, by being on the PreDental Society Eboard, Volunteering in the dental school for 4 years, and even talking to Admin (Including Dean Rouse, Dr. Skinner) on a regular basis. Im saying all this to say, going to HU for undergrad is as well and good, but when I applied fro teh dental school I wasn't even granted an interview even when I had a competitive application and a social advantage...

Take home message, don't think just because you attend HU for undergrad, you are a sure in for their dental school.

Wow you didn't even get an interview? Did you ask them why?

Yeah, tell me about it. When I asked, I kept getting many different responses from DAT wasn't high enough, assumed I would have been accepted at another school, I applied too late (in August), I mean they went full circle with excuses, but fact of the matter is they didn't interview me without advising me a sure method of action to make me a better applicant. Im not bitter though...anymore. Im just going to keep applying.

I'm sorry to hear that. Are you applying this cycle? And are you still a student there?

Congrats on your acceptance! My stats were 3.2 gpa, and 17 DAT, but will change this summer as I will have a graduate level gpa, and taking the DAT again in August.

I didn't want to go to Howard THAT bad, my 1st choice was actually Meharry. I knew A LOT of people at HUSOD and I was already in DC for the past 4 years, so the transition would have been tremendously easier; that was the only highlight. In regards to their program, I can only speak on what I have seen, and what the current and former students tell me. Some students HATE it (Majority), and some LOVE it. How did you like it during your interview...could you see yourself there for the next 4 years? Compared to other dental schools, it is rather OLD SCHOOL. Technology wise, it's not that advanced, but whose to say what will happen in the next 3 years. When I left, they were doing work. I think the professors are top notch though, I know some and you can't beat there capacity of knowledge and compassion for helping...my opinion though, remember I have never been one of their students! Some people think that the school is full of African Americans, and grant it, they're the majority, but the school is fairly diverse, so if you want (or continue) the "HBCU" experience, going there for dental school won't serve you any justice.

Being a grad student at the school that is currently the nations newest dental school, I believe these students will have a HUGE advantage over HU dental students at graduation. If it were me...I would choose BU.

Hey BMAN, thank you for ur reply. when i went to the interview at howard, i felt the school is really old, the student tour gave us the feeling that he is not happy there. they got a new sim lab but they didnt show it to us at the tour. i am really leaning toward BU, at my interview all students that i talked to told me that they love the school and their faculty, they also have ton of research opportunity apex and externship programs which is a plus. i wanna specialize and i feel BU would help more, is that true ?? i liked BU but the cost is really high. if i picked howard over BU i would save 144 000 over the 4 years. so i am still thinking about it, but i really liked BU and i am thinking i am going there. what do u guys think ? do i think right ? or should i pick the cheaper ? or it doesnt matter where i go to specialize ?

Be smart with your decision. Going to a school because it is NICER isn't gonna d u much good. In the end u'll only end up in deeper debt. besides, everyone ends up being Dr. so n so DDS/DMD. HU also offers specialization - if that's what you're looking for. Think about this, If the other schools charge sooo much money to attend DS, of course they can afford to be up there with the latest technology. HU thrives itself on being dedicated to service and helping the disenfranchised - which is also evident in its very low tuition cost.
So if ur some rich guy who doesn't mind shelling out a couple hundred thousand more bucks because the place is "nicer" well, more power to you. But if u want a sound and solid education, in a diverse school, that helps the disenfranchised (students included), and will not burden you in debt, then HU would be the choice of the two.

Ultimately you have to decide anyway. Do your research..
PM me if anything

The sim lab is nice, its the newest thing the school has (6 years old), and its nothing special....seen one lab, seen them all! They have a couple post doc programs, I think Ortho, Oral Surgery, and GPR, but all the 09 dental grads were so eager to leave HU, all the ones I talked too...they all applied to other institutions.

HU is the perfect example of "you get what you pay for"...The way I see it, you say you save 144k in 4 years, and thats probably the average you'll be making annually once you graduate, and face it...you'll be paying "bills" all of your life, so don't put a price on your education and happiness. It is "wise" to always to go down the financially friendly path, but since dentistry is bound to be your life...you DONT want to cheat yourself out of one penny! IMO.

yeh this what i felt when i was at the school, students didnt like being there esp the tour guy he basically ment if u got somewhere just go there and this scares me. i agree 144 000 is much but shouldn't be in my education way. one more question, in my situation i want to do my post grad specialization at OSU do you think the school i go to will help in my application or just doing very well in my classes and nbde ?
