Hi guys, good to hear everyone getting interviews and acceptances. CONGRATSS!!! to all. I finally got accepted to one school which is Howard. I had 3 interviews plus another 3 coming up so i dunno but i think i might be going to Howard.

Anyways what do you guys think of Howard?? Do you think it will prepare me for the boards and teach me to become a great dentist? Also what about getting residency, do you think it will be hard to get into one?

Thank you

From my experience working with hundreds of volunteer dentists, I learned that if you're motivated enough, you can get a good dental education at any dental school. Howard will not have the same competition as other schools, thus you may slack off a bit yourself, but Howard will absolutely prepare you for the boards.

Howard will definitely prepare you for the boards, and clinically, you will become one of the best dentists in the country if you go there.

going to howard, i don't see why you would get to slack off due to "lesser competition"... i'm sure the professors will want the same standard of excellence from their students just like anywhere else... Howard is an accredited dental school so to be sucessful, I think its up to you to do your best.

3.3 gpa, 3.2 science. 19/21/20

You guys know what the school really looks into? I have a friend who has good GPA (3.69) and also good DAT (19, PAT 21) but got rejected right away. I was told that because she's not African American that's why she's not in the pool.

I'm asian and I got accepted. It's not a matter of race. It's important to show your interest, not just look at Howard as a back up school. Have a good community service background help too.

Steven, you don't sound too excited about the possibility of attending Howard in August. If you were so unsure of the quality of education you would recieve there, why did you apply? Please don't be another one of those "Howard is my super duper back up school and I will only go there if every other school in our great nation rejects me" type of person. The accomplishments and history of this university demands more respect than that. Besides, I know many students who consider Howard as one of their top choices and would love to go there.

AmyWho, you have to understand that Howard University knows that not everyone will fit in or feel comfortable at a historically black college. Perhaps, that's one reason they do not grant interviews to every non-black applicant with 3.69 gpa's and 20+ DAT scores. Many applicants of non-african american heritage with those type of numbers will more likely choose school B over Howard if they have the option. Don't think that Howard doesn't know this. So, why waste time interviewing dozens and dozens of candidates who have luke warm feelings about attending the school? Just like every other dental school in America, Howard wants to fill their seats with the brightest students who they feel are genuinely interested and reflects the mission of the university. Plus, Howard is very much commited to serving/providing opportunities in the black community. Not too many dental schools are concerned with doing that.

PCrooks - i am feeling you dude, I have my interview their this Monday - Feb 4th and dude - they just have to say the word and I am there. I wonder if some of these people know that Howard is the 5th oldest dental school in the US

On anothe level - if you have any tips they are appreciated Crooks

PCrooks I am loving your love for HUCD 🙂.

I agree 100%! I currently go to Howard and people that go here for undergrad don't always get into HU dental (go figure). Howard accepts the best and the brightest and in the dental school they want students to also have a goal for serving the community. As far as Howard being a back up school because its "easier" that is false; there is no easy dental school. I worked with a few dental students in my Pre-Dental org at Howard and they are very down to earth, friendly and fun, not to mention they have a joy for dentistry. Howard is my first choice and for cost (since im from NC) UNC ad ECU are my other choices!

Also Howard medical/dental programs do have a diverse group of people from all over the world. I see a good blend of white, black, caribbean, and Asian people who go here so you won't feel left out if your in one of the "minority" at a historically black school. There is also other colleges in DC to mix with too!

It just seems like a lot of people on SDN don't really understand how important Howard University is to many people. It isn't a designated back up school. It's actually a top choice for many. Matter of fact it was my top choice. Therefore, I represent! Just as people represent their schools. I can't wait to meet Dentalishus and all of the other newly accepted D1's in August! Good luck Kinks! You're only 30 minutes away. 👍

Its nice to know that I have future class mates on here...
(HUCD class of 2012).😀😀😀😀😀

I can't wait to meet you too PCrooks!🙂 I think I might be tempted to continue calling you PCrooks though even after I meet you learn you real name. 😀

By the way I am pulling for you Nraouf because I remember when we were both on SDN waiting to hear some news on Nov 30th.

dudes - did my interview on Monday - man it was crazy - I want to go to Howard so bad. Mrs. Clarke was very cool, the dean was cool - every body was cool. Mrs. Clarke says we should know whats really good by next tuesday. If I get in, rather when I get in, I will promptly withdraw my application from temple, NYC, souther illinoius, suny, etc. Howard is and will continue to be my first choice. I don't want to go anywhere else. Anything less than Howard is a damn disappointment.

I hope that you'll be joining us 🙂

Hey ya'll,
I know I'm a little late with this whole coversation but I just joined SDN and I just had to add my two cents 🙂. I too have been accpeted to Howard and I am very exctied. Howard has NEVER been just a back up school for me. I've interviewed at several other schools and still Howard is where I chose to go. The legacy and continual contribuitons of this school are amazing and it kinda annoys me that people look at it as a back up school and are simply flabbergasted if they don't get it.
Oh, and a little about the interview process for anyone who still may be about to have one...my interview was...well, lets just say...hard. Mostly everyone I met was incredibly friendly but my interviewer made me feel a little attacked. I say all of this not to scare off future interviewees,
but to say that if you're in this type of situation, just keep smiling and showing off your personality. I mean, my interviewer asked me everything from the school's mission statement, to questions about geography. It soon became obvious that his goal was to rattle me. He wanted to see exactly how I conducted myself....and thank GOD...it must have worked because I got in. I interviewed on November 30 and got my acceptance in December. I was ecstatic! So good luck everyone and please remember...HOWARD UNIVERSITY DENTAL SCHOOL IS A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH...DON'T GET IT TWISTED!

Congrats to everyone accepted into Howard!! DrPrettySmiles, thanks for sharing a little about how your interview went at Howard!! I wish I would have gotten one 🙁 I think it's probably a little late in the game now though..
Does anyone know if they actually send out a rejection letter? I haven't heard a thing from the school. Should I call them?
btw, Howard is not by back up school..

everybody getting crunk!!!! I love howard and I will be seeing everyone who chooses to attend in august🙂

"everybody get crunk" - i like the sound of that

aahhhhhhh ish, I need to reach palm beach. I have never been to Florida still - i guess i will take a road trip when i get to howard - hopefully i will have time for that

You know I've heard that howad is a place where if your not african american, you don't belong there... and when I told my friends that I got accepted to howard, they congradulated me but had that look on their face because I'm asian.
But you know when I was there for my interview, Ms. Clarke and everyone that I met made me feel like I fit right in, and they made me feel like I am part of the "howard dentistry FAMILY" so for those of people who talk with nothing to back them up.. they just don't know...
I am very excited to see all of you in AUGUST!!!

No doubt about it. If a person chooses to go to Howard University they should know that they are attending a historically black college. A college that has been committed to educating the best and brightest African Americans since 1867. However, you don't have to be black in order to gain admission. Each applicant must fit the mold of the university.

Some African American students also experience culture shock when they first arrive to Howard. They are blown away by the mass of black students from all across the world (America, Africa, & The Caribbeans). To me it is a beautiful thing to see so many young black people striving for greatness, instead of just living up to the stereotypes that are often portrayed in the media. The camaraderie and relationships built at HBCU's such as Howard are why so many black people choose to attend. If an individual isn't black but feels comfortable in this type of setting they shouldn't have any problems at the university. It's really all about their comfort level.

Besides, Howard has professors and students of all races and religions. The percentage is just different then what one would expect at a UCSF, Tufts, Michigan, or NYU. I've seen dental students of all colors at Howard. It just so happen that the majority of them are black. What would you expect though? Aftter all it is the mecca of all HBCU's!

Hello to my fellow classmates, I just got accepted to Howard,i interviewed on Friday and got accepted on monday. my stats were 3.2gpa in math 3.1 science and 17 on the DAT. 19-bio, 17 -Chem, 20-Orgo. I place my app. in January with no clinical experience because i had to support my self for undergrad. I am very surprised of my success. The only reason that I am putting this info here is because I want to encourage somebody about their own stats. When you interview you just have to be yourself and try not to lie because they can tell. What is meant for you nobody can take that away.So for the next cycle just learn from what i said. Howard is a great school and i look forward to seeing my classmates in August.

Congrats Triniflavor - it seems like we will have quite a few caribbean people in our class this year. That is awesome. I like the line about what is for you noone can take away that is serious talks. i will add you name to the official class list and please join our face book group.
