How's school been JDpharmd?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Tri,

School is good. I guess I've kinda been absent (from here) lately because we had finals week and then two weeks off for thanksgiving. We finished our first quarter, and it went just fine for me. I think that I pulled off a 3.25/4, but it really hurts when you see that ONE low test score kill a good average (in like every class). My second quarter starts up on Monday, but most classes are just a continuation of the norms (biochem 2, physiology 2, pharmaceutics 2, intro to professional practice 2 (shadows, hospital), research methods/epidemiology). Each quarter is 17 credits.

I'm not burnt out yet and we all kid ourselves by saying that we're all " 1/11th " done. I don't know if they eased us into the first quarter or not. It will be nice to have a short (2 week) winter break in the middle of this quarter so that I can catch up on all the stuff that I would have normally left for the morning of (I'll do it, I promised myself!). This quarter we have presentations and stuff to do that we didn't have to do the first quarter and more of our exams are cumulative (cough cough biochem 2 cough cough), but I don't think it's going to kill anyone. Rumor has it that we will really start feeling the pain around the middle of our 4th quarter (summer quarter). We only have one week off between winter break and the end of August.. that's when it starts to hurt.

I think that we've lost between 2 and 4 of the 133 students in our class this year. I have an idea that a few others might have failed a course or two this quarter, but I'm not exactly sure how it plays into their status as students. How's that killer GPA policy that they were gunning for at USC going, tri??

So, when I step back and look at it all, its going well. The school is really nice, my classmates are cool for the most part, and it's a heck of a lot warmer at school than it is here! (I'm in Colorado for the holiday, Brrrrrr). I'm looking forward to 65 and sunny again, even if it is 115 all summer long. 😉

Good luck to everyone else in school or applying! I'm interested to hear how it's going for you too.

Our biosystems prof is doing everything ec taking our exams for us to get the grades up. he's absolutely bad @ss!! Way to go Dr. Ann!! He just got a $1.9 million grant for cancer protein studies too. What a guy!! oh yeah and he tells the best jokes while we're waitin for lecturers to show up. Eg.

"When i was growing up in Taiwan we had the same ratings system for movies."

G stood for Good
PG for Pretty Good
R for Really good
and
X for X-ellent
and finally
XXX for Extraordinarily Exceedingly Excellent

I'm more worried about 'ceutics bc i didn't have the case study for the second half of the semester so i have no clue what's going on.

The grading policy is indeed a crock of poo, but i should be able to handle it this year. dunno about next when things startin gettin more hectic.

congrats on your dean's enlistment JD!!!

Dr. Anh is the greatest, he tries to pass as many people as he can, but of course, there are always people who he can't save. (He was our teacher of the year) 2nd semister, Bio system becomes more phsyiology oriented and less anatomy. Dr. Halsworth, he is fair but rough, he would actually fail people if they don't do well. The final was a killer considering we were exhausted from the other finals already. Study ahead for this class. Pharmacuetics I had the most retake during my year. Gene therapy, Dr. Cadenas is a nice person, he pass almost everyone just like Dr. Anh. Final for gene therapy was difficult though but fair.
2nd year is a pain in the ass, it is fill with a lot of busy work, but it should be okay for those who have their IV rotation (aka FREE LABOR!) in the summer or winter break. It is relatively straight forward and a lot of memorization. As the year progress it becomes more clinical and less pure science base. For those who have IV rotation during the school year, it is hell since it cuts into valuable study time. There is a point in second year where u guys will have 8 straight midterms in a row and then one week break and then finals. Just remember to keep ur GPA up and get all of ur immunization shots in so u can have a better shot at getting a summer IV rotation, but it is still random. My best advice, if u don't get IV in the summer or during winter break, just get someone IV stuff and study it in the summer that way u don't have to wait to the last minute to study everything.

Thanks gdk!! That was helpful. I'm pretty jazzed about second semester. It doesn't look nearly as rough as this one. I've heard that 2nd yr is poo from a bunch of peeps. I'll take your advice right after i understand what you're talkin about.

Are you level II or III?
