Hi guys i’m looking for advice generally and ecs so i can get into a bs/md program.
NYC Asian Highschool Freshmen
88 gpa 89 W
(hs doesn’t offer honors only aps)
1290 SAT
Expected to start in Spring semester: St Jude Fundraising Club
Hand To Hunger Club
(2 fundraising clubs)
DE anatomy and physiology 1
College algebra
(HS won’t give grade, only credits)
Virtual medical shadowing volunteering
8 hrs
virtual shadowing hours: 12 hrs
i do a bunch of random volunteering maybe 25 hours in total.
I’m also applying to a bunch of medical/research programs for the summer

I’ve been calling a lot of clinics asking if i could volunteer unfortunately most of them said no.
I also tried cold emailing but it haven’t really worked out.
Does anyone have any advice?

Improve your GPA and SAT scores.

Taking the SAT as a freshman(???)-I'm guessing this is associated with Duke TIP or one of those other programs(???)

Regardless, my best advice is this:
1. Try and see if you can get real in person shadowing
2. At this point, random volunteering is fine. Many clinics won't let you volunteer before 16, and some before you turn 18. You may have better luck at hospitals...would recommend looking into either patient escort roles or roles in the "customer service vein" of hospitals (i.e. delivering meals to and from patients...I did this in my gap year but there were some high schoolers in my group)
3. Obviously retake the SAT but don't do it until you're ready. Wait to junior year for this.
4. Finally, not trying to discourage you but I do want to emphasize that you shouldn't really apply to BS/MD programs until you've done enough shadowing to confirm this career is for you and that you would be deeply dissatisfied doing anything else. I would also emphasize to not forget that you're still just a kid...high school only happens once and you should do the things high schoolers do (i.e. prom, homecoming, sports, arts, hobbies, etc.) and live a bit in the moment. You have 3 years left, enjoy them!

PS: Also goes without saying but don't do EVERY thing high schoolers do (i.e. don't do something criminal, don't do substances, and don't post anything dumb on social media).

Your GPA needs to be above a 94 your sat has to be a minimum 1450, more likely than not 1500+

I'm gonna give you the same advice I gave the other kid. Good luck with this unique program, I have no real advice there.

I know everyone is basically saying to chill, which you should, but I will say, from a study strategy standpoint-

For classes where you have to remember things (words, numbers, etc). I'm talking biology, history, psychology, etc. Use Anki. Or some form of spaced repetition.

For classes where you have to problem solve (math, science, physics), you need to do a TON of practice problems. Like just beat your head (metaphorically) against a whiteboard.

Some classes (chemistry, organic chemistry) require both memorization AND problem solving.

Also, when I was your age I used to run around saying "Sleep is for the weak and the dead!" that was incredibly foolish of me. You need 7-8 hours of sleep a night, basically every night. Going on a sleep deprivation stretch in high school and college has probably permanently hampered my cognitive performance a little. Maybe. But anyways, I'm just saying go to bed dude. No all nighters. Study in advance of the test. No cramming.
