My son did clinical research during HS and it was published recently after he graduated and started college. How should he mention, research period followed by publication date?
. . . if he was included as an author.Make an entry for “publications” on the work/activities section and just put the citation.
Yes, he was included as 5th author. It was published in Hospital Pediatrics.. . . if he was included as an author.
Authored publications are good forever (HS-based, or not).Yes, he was included as 5th author. It was published in Hospital Pediatrics.
it shows early motivation and commmitment
He did get the gig thru a connection but he was strictly told that not to expect name on the paper. However PI was very impressed and decided to add his name. My son was able to find two more research projects at a UC on his own thru his performance in science competitions, interviews by PIs and both offered to take him. Through that experience he found research at a top 20 UG and working towards a first author publication. so I am not worried about connections issue. It also suggests the kid is well connected
Maybe, maybe not. You don’t really have to be well connected to apply to HS research programs like the NIH summer student program, but you do have to do your research to even know they exist.
Three of the high schools within my district actually have science academy is within the overall body of the high school that for four years students partner up with our state flag ship University. Instead of English classes they take scientific investigation classes, and so on. Basically all of their classes are tied back towards the sciences and in their junior and senior years of high school They have a lot of interaction with professors at the University. I believe that almost every single student is part of some publication because they get added to the author list as early as their freshman year. I can’t imagine their contributions are very large, but it is what it is.Maybe, maybe not. You don’t really have to be well connected to apply to HS research programs like the NIH summer student program, but you do have to do your research to even know they exist.
Good observation 🙂I'm going to guess that the type of applicant who does high school research and has a parent asking questions for them on SDN is pretty well connected.
My high school had research in STEM fields through local universities as a requirement. So, I know lots of kids who had publications from high school. Unfortunately I didn’t get one, but I did get a research university credit since I had to be enrolled to actually do the work:l.And some kids just attend HS's with a long tradition of doing high tech work.

Dominette, the cow whose DNA is being sequenced for the international bovine genome sequencing project, was provided to Sacred Heart Academy by the USDA.
