I thought that for a psych residency you did a year of IM as a tern and then three years of residency, but then someone told me it was six months instead of twelve. Could someone please clear me on this?

once upon a time you had to do a full year of medicine internship. nowadays you go into a 4 year categorical psych program with only 6 medicine months during pgy-1. but if you prefer, you can still do a preliminary year in medicine or transition and enter a psych program as a pgy-2. not as many of those spots, though.

On average, a psych internship is 4 months medicine, 2 months neuro, and 6 months psych. If you don't do the neuro as an intern, you have to do it later.

Do you guys think that this enough time of medicine before being thrown into psych?

seeing as most psych facilities won't touch a medically unstable patient with a ten foot iv pole, this is more than enough med time for most. if not, i'd imagine most programs would allow you to use up some of your pgy-3 or 4 elective time doing extra medicine rotations if that's what you feel weakest in.
