in BR chemistry, chapter 1... they use the term hydroscopic to refer to a hydroscopic salt that soaks up H2O and doesnt react with CO2.

what does hydroscopic mean? when i looked it up this is what i found...

The word is misspelled and therefore has no definition. The spelling is hygroscopic.
The definition of hygroscopic is: readily taking up and retaining moisture.
The definition is from Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary.

is hydroscopic the wrong word? there is also a passage in BR concerning this concept.

I've heard people use either, although I understand that "hygroscopic" is the correct version. Hygroscopic compounds normally need to be kept in a dessicator, or carefully sealed away from the atmosphere to prevent them taking up too much water.

You have a very old version of the general chemistry books.

WHAT?! i thought i had the most up to date version of all books! i called BR and they said i had the most up to date versions for everything.

do you know what the most current version is? For GCHEM, i have the books with the blue cover (yellow trim); copyright year is 2008.

ill have to check all my books tmw. is there a thread with the most recent versions of all BR books? now im worried... thanks for bringing this to my attention

I have a 2003 copy with that typo and a Summer 2010 copy without that typo, so I'm not sure when it was removed. Because you mentioned that typo, I assumed you had the 2003 book I was looking at. If you ordered it from BR in the last year, then you have the latest version.

would you recommend getting the 2010 summer editions of the series? how can i find out if there have been important changes to the editions i have? i called BR and they said what i had was the most recent.

also, thanks for answering so many of my posts/questions. i read all your posts and your super helpful. 🙂 its very appreciated!
