Obviously 100% oxygen is a fire waiting to happen. For those out there doing hyperbaric though (I know some of y'all are) is this sort of thing a remote possibility with modern equipment and a non-idiot at the helm? I ask because I legit don't know. Not making any accusations.

Many things at that pressure can spark. Only 100% cotton and a clean body (no body oils) are allowed in the chamber

The "Dr" who runs that facility has a doctorate in special education. Not joking. The treatment seems to be mostly for autism, although they claim it will also cure almost anything. 100% O2 at 1 atm is a huge fire risk. At 1.5 atm it's worse. At 2 atm you get into the range of oxygen toxicity and seizures. Not a safe technology for the homeopaths and snake oil salesman. At least your 1:10000 echinacea tincture won't kill anyone.

very sad

It’s always a possibility, but vanishingly small when proper safety precautions are taken. I’m curious to see what the investigation finds. Even more of a tragedy because at this particular practice, this kid was probably being treated for autism or CP, which HBO has not been shown to be effective for.

The list of things they're claiming to treat with HBO is wild ...

HBO Indications ...
Literally everything. It's apparently a panacea. At least until your fraudster ass causes a kid to die in an explosion directly in front of his mother.

I hope the person running this place does time.

Actually their doc is an FAAEM. Faculty - Oxford Training and Certification

He is the research director and has multiple other positions across the state so I doubt he is on site much. The two people who look like they are probably running the chambers have ICHT certification which just requires EMT as a pre-req. Or you can be a chiropractor for your pre-req. Or a veterinary assistant😳. Conveniently they also run an ICHT certification program so they can certify their own techs.

A bit more details. Doesn't seem to have been regulated or inspected by anyone. Kid was getting treated for ADHD. Had received 30+ treatments at a cost of $8000

Hyperbaric fire details

So unbelievably sad. People who sell snake oil should face consequences beyond whatever money can be collected in a lawsuit. But, they probably won't. More likely they get to be Secretary of Health.

I wonder how this family ended up there for ADHD treatment. We have great options for ADHD treatment that don't catch on fire or cost $8000 for even 30 months of treatment.

Distrust of expertise and authority coupled with a need to feel special. It's not about effective treatment. It's about the secret, better treatment that the dumb sheep don't know about and that the authorities are trying to hide.

The only thing i remember the psychiatrist on my my psych rotation telling me is that the secret and most effective treatment for ADHD is, and I quote, "not being a ****ty parent."

I'm not an authority on ADHD but as time goes on I can't tell if that was a joke or not

It's is

So this case wound up being even worse than I thought it was gonna be. Here are some of the allegations:

-The staff were decreasing the recorded treatment cycles for the chambers for years. The chambers are rated for a certain number of treatments in their lifetimes. Decreasing the number will make it appear that the chamber has more uses left in it. These chambers may have had wear-and-tear issues related to being used more than they were recorded to have been.
-The chamber was not getting yearly inspections, which the manufacturer suggests.
-No physician was present during the treatment in question.
-There was no pre-dive safety checklist.
-The child was not given a ground. This could have caused a spark and ignited the fire.
-The chamber operator was not a licensed hyperbaric tech, and she also allegedly falsified some medical record. Not sure exactly what was allegedly falsified.

The CEO, safety director, and an operations guy are all being charged with murder. The chamber operator is being charged with involuntary manslaughter. If the allegations are true, the admin people all deserve to go to jail forever. The operator should get hefty jail time too. This was the end result of years of active disregard of safety.

I’m not a lawyer but will murder charges stand? Regardless, everyone involved needs to be held accountable.

I don't know Michigan law, and, I am not a lawyer (thank heavens), but, "murder" won't stick, but lesser will/might, such as manslaughter or their equiv of criminally negligent homicide.

Murder needs the "mens rea" (that you know you're doing it, and it's wrong).

Now, they might charge with murder, but that's because they throw everything at the wall, and see what sticks. Otherwise, every single charge would need it's own trial.
