I am an undergrad and my cycle is still a bit off. I haven't closed the door on any specialties but my current preference would be to go into oncology or emergency med. My question is how difficult would it be to enter one of these fields as a DO? I hear all the time that it is hard for DO's to secure residencies other than FM, would these two fields I am interested in be too competitive for a DO graduate to secure?

EM? Quite doable.

Ocology? Very hard.

The following are DO friendly or doable: EM, Neuro, Gas, Path, OB/GYN, Peds, PM&R, IM.

Who told you that it's hard for DOs to secure a residency other than FM?....

there is a lot of misinformation on DOs not being able to match into competitive specialties. It does hinder your chance at certain programs but if you take a look at much lists, so many specialties that are deemed as competitive have been matched by DOs recently. Not saying your chances are good but it is possible depending on your academics.

Check out KCOM match list for example. https://www.atsu.edu/kcom/prospective_students/documents/postgraduatepositions2016.pdf.

You'll see derm, uro, ortho ( mayo and case!) , 8+ general surgery, rads, 10+ EM and KCOM is a pretty mid tier DO school.

I work in a neurosurg Dept and we have had 2 DO residents in the past. And before I get crucified for saying this...... MD will give you a better chance at these specialties but if you end up going DO, your dreams are not shattered.

I was under the impression that, as far as IM subspecialties go, the only thing DOs really have a hard time in is GI and Allergy/Immunology.

There's a number being thrown around that 2/3 of DOs get will get a cardiology fellowship, a number that increases markedly when you do IM at a University Hospital. That number seems pretty good to me. I thought onco was about the same.

The most difficult ones by far are GI, Cardiology, Heme/Oncology, and to a certain degree AI. It all a matter of what is hard for everyone to match. What holds you back isn't being a DO at this point if you are in an ACGME residency, but what ACGME program you matched into.
