I am doing these kaplan physical topical tests and the sections on their practice tests and they are just unreasonably long and require immense knowledge of the concepts to do well on the questions...

is this just my opinion?

tell me that the aamc isn't as bad...

those are the EASY questions. If you can't get those right then you should forget about medical school.

fo' real!

Kaplan sucks. If you think you're incompetant, hopelessly lost when taking the PS section, you're more likely to pay for their course.

Yes, Kaplan not only requires you to already know a lot of stuff... they are also heavily based on calculations (trying to strike fear in the mathphobes). I noticed that a lot of the time, I was able to get the correct answer by just figuring out how to manipulate the units. Anyhow, I've taken all the Kaplan topicals, two Kaplan PS Full Lengths, and four AAMC tests. By far, the Kaplan tests are more difficult AND require more time than the allotted 100 minutes.

That being said, do not despair if you don't do well on the topicals. Do, however, learn the material you were missing from them because they are most likely your weak spots.

Sharpnerd, I think you hit the nail on the head very well.

My question is, why don't they try and emulate their tests more like AAMC's style, format, level, etc...? I did kaplan's full lengths 1-11. Then I do AAMC's 3-7 to find out they have little resemblence.

haha sorry I can't get into Mr. Kaplan's head

I think they figure that if you can do calculations, which means you have memorized the formula (most of the time)... then you understand the materials. For manipulators of the units like myself, however, this means I do not understand the material and just enjoy scribbling math.
