I just finished up with my DAT and scored the following:

Bio: 18
GC: 20
OC: 19
PAT: 25
RC: 19
QR: 17
TS: 19
AA: 19

I dunno how I feel about these scores because I know I could have done better. I couldnt sleep the 3 nights before my test because I couldnt stop thinking. Then when I actually did fall asleep I would toss and turn because I was trying to do stuff in my dreams like balance impossible chemical equations, haha. I could tell I was tired during the test and couldnt give it my full attention. I also scored a lot better on practice tests...so I dunno.

Im gonna post a breakdown after a few beers and a nap. Stay tuned!

Breaking it down:

Before ever coming across SDN, I had ordered The Princeton Review DAT self-paced study package since they did not offer the course where I live because of "lack of demand." I find that a little hard to believe considering they are located in the middle of a D1 campus of 40,000+ students...but anyway, this was my first real study material. I went through the "in class compendium" taking notes and doing all the assigned homeworks for each section and took their practice diags as well as the 2007 ADA and thought I was ready to spank the DAT. While I was basically waiting for my test date, I came across SDN and that's when I realized I wasn't as prepared as I thought I was.

Ill post a little about each section and what supplemental materials I used besides TPR and what I think about the materials.

Bio (Score: 18)

Materials:

  • TPR
  • Cliffs AP Bio (just the sections over taxonomy, botany, and the cycles)
  • DAT qVault (about 100/550 of the Questions)
  • Destroyer (about half of the bio section)
  • Achiever (took the first 3 tests)
Overall, I thought this section would have been manageable if I had put more time into studying. To be honest, I didn't spend as much time as I needed to. I went through The Princeton Review books and made notes on all the lectures. I only did what was covered in the "in class compendium" for the most part, and did not use the Biological Sciences Review book as much, except for the first few topics. I felt that I knew a good bit of the material, but after reading about how "random" the bio section was, I thought I was at the point of marginal return where I would see more benefit from studying the other sections.

Anyway, I definitely saw some recycled material from the past exams(ADA 2007 and 2009) and I think even a question from qVault was on there. qvault was a good resource from what I could tell, but some of questions are so easy it was almost insulting, haha. Destroyer is a good material for practice questions, but has questions much harder than the real DAT. IMO it's a better resource for OC and GC than it is for bio. Achiever was good for practice questions as well, I thought it was pretty on par with the real DAT as far as bio goes. It's also good for practicing your timing if that is something you are having trouble with.

This section was way easier than I would have expected, and that is why I am upset with my score. I know I could have scored better here if I wasnt so sleep deprived. I think I only had 1 calculation I had to work all the way through and it was a simple pH question. All the rest of the calculation problems were set up in the answer choices and were easy to match up. To say the least, Im really upset with my score here especially since I scored higher than 20 on all the Achiever tests (22-25s) and old ADA exams. Not to mention did really well on Chad's quizzes too.

Anyways, as everyone knows, Chad is great here. I think someone who has never taken a chemistry class could learn it all from chad and score decent on the exam. Achiever is good practice, questions are definitely harder than the real exam but if you can do them then you should be able to do easier questions of the same type. Same thing with destroyer. One of the things I did notice tho is that a lot of these materials are calculation based, when on the real DAT there are a good deal of concept questions. Nothing too hard tho.

This section was a little tricky and I think you really need to know the concepts more than memorization here. I think as far as the sciences go, Destroyer is best for this section. Obviously, you have to know chemical reactions here and none of mine were basic reactions. I had a question that was actually straight from destroyer but the answer that was in destroyer wasn't on the test... I know it was the exact same question too because it was one that I had written down on my sheet to go over every day before I even started studying. Not sure if its an error on ADA's part or destroyer's. Ill be looking more into it soon. Achiever was pretty decent here as well (I was scoring 22s+). I dont want to give too much away but know concepts forwards and be able to apply them in reverse as well (literally) and be able to do 5 sequence reactions and know the names of the reactions as well.

PAT (Score: 25)

Materials:

  • Crack the DAT PAT (10 test version)
This section always came pretty easy to me. I scored in the high 20s on the first practice test I even took (easier on paper exams). Really, I think I could of scored even higher if I caught some ZZZZs and my eyes would of stayed in focus. CDP really is all you need here. The only thing CDP doesnt cover well is the half folds that they have on the real exam in the folding section. Also, on the real exam, there were some small holes and some big holes for some reason? They didnt affect the answer choices, but it was weird to see. Also, in the pattern folding section, it seems they like adding more folds than testing on the color shading. Had 1 that threw me for a loop but I finished with like 12 mins to spare so I think I figured it out. In the angle ranking section, look at your answer choices before trying to determine ranking. If you can do CDP u can do it on the DAT. On the DAT it seemed that every other angle questions was insultingly easy, followed by an angle question equivalent to CDP.

RC (Score: 19)

Dont really have much to say here because I didn't really study for this section. I think I did one of the RC sections in Achiever, and the RC on 2007 ADA and that was it. I was just praying that I didnt get the physics passage.

My method was TPR's method. Read the whole first paragraph, and the first sentence of each of the following paragraphs, and the whole last paragraph. As you are reading, jot down 2-4 words on what you read for each paragraph so u can reference back.

Dont let my score be an accurate representation of Math Destroyer. Its an awesome practice resource and I would of done better but I just didnt have time to get through the whole destroyer book. I didnt use or even look at the calculator so I cant say much about that either. Know trig and conversions.

Anyways, thanks to everyone on SDN. SDN has been the best resource. Let me know what you guys think about my scores, Im debating a retake. My overall GPA is about a 3.55 and my science GPA is probably around a 3.2. My undergrad school is known however for its rigorous science curriculum and in turn has the highest rate of acceptance into medical school (I know, not dental school) in the state...for what thats worth... I decided somewhat recently that dentistry was indeed my passion so im not quite the typical applicant. I graduated in 2009 and am going back and finishing up prereqs (english, stats, stupid **** like that) right now. Im open to state and private schools as well, and even looking at some abroad.

Thanks for reading, everyone! And good luck!

Beastly PAT score. Solid overall 👍

Great scores man! As long as you have a decent GPA you should be pretty good, especially with that PAT. Congrats, go enjoy life before school starts!

ill trade u some of my PAT for some of your TS! my GPA is right above a 3.5 and Ill have to check on my science GPA. Its tough for me to get all my resources together because ive gone to 4 diff universities haha.

19s are about average for overall acceptance, right?

yessir. 17 is the national average, and 19 is the national acceptance score. do work on your interviews sir!
