I wanted to ask you guys for your opinion. My science GPA is about a 3 (not a single A) in any of my pre-med courses thus far and I plan to apply next year. I got a B- in genbio II do you think it would be wise to retake this class?

I normally wouldn't tell anyone to retake anything B- or above... not one A though?

If I'm you, I grab a few upper-level sciences and plan on acing them.

Try to do better from here on out and prove to them that you can get A's

I wish I knew about grade replacement when I was still an undergrad. But it all depends, i'm sure if you kill the MCAT you'll be fine even if your science is a 3.0. Currently my science is a 3.1 (barely), and my overall is a 3.4. I figure if I can kill the MCAT next month I should be standing pretty decent.

Agreed. Get A's in all the upper level courses, and if not just make sure you have great LORs, ECs, at least a 3.00 in both GPAs and a 31-35 on the MCAT. If you have that you should be fine.

Really though is there a reason you didn't get any A's in the pre-reqs? Was it the material or just timing, busy, etc?

You can still do grade replacement even if you graduated.

So I just realized that I had a C- in my Gen Chem 2 class, and being less than 2.0--I'll need to retake it. I also got a B in the Lab (a separate course).

I just registered to take it at CC, but they have it as a 4 hour course which is both G.Chem 2 and the Lab. Assuming I get an A, AACOMAS will replace both the C- and the B yes?

Also, seeing as how I'll be finishing that course in August, and I'll be applying Day 1 this summer, the process for updating AACOMAS is just sending them updated transcripts yeah? They then forward it to the schools? Or do we contact the schools ourselves?

Thanks!

For the Gen Chem class- only if your first initial course total was 4 credits- (3 lecture, 1 lab). ACCOMAS will have you report the Gen Chem retake as a 3+1 format as well. (I've emailed and called them about this), but you can also if you want to be sure. They're quick about replies.

As I understand it, you can't replace a 3 credit course and 1 credit lab with a 4 credit course and lab (combined). You would, however, be able to replace the C-, which will have the biggest effect on your GPA anyways.

As far as updating your application, all you have to do is send in your transcript to AACOMAS and they will update your app and send the update to schools. That being said, it might be in your best interest to contact the schools and make sure they actually register the update. Most schools did for me, but I had to contact 1-2 of them to update my file.
