I doubt myself, am I good enough for medical school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You're fine there, lady. Organic Chem sucks, it's the nature of the beast. Everyone gets stressed out sometimes, the key is not letting stress bring you down.

If you can handle 52 credit hours in a year and maintain a 4.0 science GPA with working...you're going to be fine.

Take care,

Chandu

thank you so much. Chandu.

I am not super smart, just have my own little strategies to deal with chronic pain and heavy courses.

Don't worry, most doctors aren't super smart either. As much as they'd like to convince you that they are 😉 However, they are a devoted bunch (for the most part). And by the looks of it, you are too.

I am worroed if I can handle this in medical school.

Anytime you get worried about being able to handle medical school try what I do.

1. Think of a doctor who is a complete douchebag. Come on, I know you've met one.
2. Think to yourself, "Hey, they did it."
3. Realize that you yourself are not a douchebag (which I can tell you are not)
4. Realize you can do it too.

This was my strategy for numerous things (Basic Training, the MCAT, school and work at the same time).

Listen, chronic pain is a lousy deal. I'm sorry you're stuck with it, but don't let anything hold you back. It's like the Witwicky Family Motto always says - "No Sacrifice, No Victory". And if you have not seen Transformers, I recommend renting a copy immediately 😀

5. don't just realize you can do the job....realize you can do it better

chronic med issues...you'll deal with it as you go along. you've dealt with it this far, it shouldn't hinder you too much

I did the same route, RN 60+ hrs/wk, working all types of shifts revolving around the college schedule. don't worry about the hours/studying..etc. in med school as long as you get in somewhere, that's the biggest hurdle. the type of studying in med school is diff than pre reqs. I feel, it's more recall than understanding, at least at the 1-2nd yr level. concentrate on the mcat and your pre req grades so you'll give yourself a better chance on applications , good luck!!

If this is your dream,
never, but never give up

Alright. A mellow-toned grown folks conversation.

Sister, I feel your situation.

I like the douche-bag doctor visualization. 🙂.

Running with wolves now is a trick not easily swallowed. Academic rights of passage is a cost, no doubt. You pay that ferryman to take you this way. Again and again it would seem. Having considered it from somewhere close to where you sit, I guess, you just make a decision somewhere in some midnight in some dark well of your own making, that you keeping moving or turn around.

Strange it as it may seem. For me it's a semi-comical neutrality. For how I spent my waking hours. If working and studying, then fine. For you now. In the pit of the pre-med science stomach, how you look at things is more important than the outcome of minor events, like organic chemistry. A solid enough effort will get you through that fine.

Of course you're good enough. You'd really be better off asking if this often dreary company is good enough for you and your waking hours.

You say you don't want to be a nurse. You could try PA instead. It seems you seem fine for medical school though, organic chemistry does suck

Luckily I got over hat nauseated feeling over night shift. now it's not the problem for me to quit.

I am working three intense 12 hour nights along with taking an organic chemistry class, I make all my spare time from work studying for organic chemsitry, still feel like I am not spending enough time. I feel it is harder than I thought. I am frustrated to ask myself "Am I good enough for medical school?'' can I handle it even if I get in?
A little sth else about me: I am 29 year old with a chronic pain condition. I have been managing this well enough to function (apparently🙂 There was one year I took 52 credits in a 12 months period, but do not want to do it again if at all possible. My science GPA is great, 4.0 with all A on general chem 1,2, physics 1,2 from a four year college, actually I made the highest score on my physics final in a big class.
Nursing is definitely not going to my career, no matter what.
But am I good enough for medical school since now I am stressed ou for o chem?

Thank you!

Pretty much ditto to what everyone else said...........OCHEM will suck the life right out of you. Even when you think you got it you hear...."no the mechanism is clear. The more electronegative atom will.......wait I thought Oxygen was more electronegative......no. not in this case. " WTF.

I was fortunate enough to work near many many doctors during pre reqs and application cycle (which I had to do twice by the way). all the doctors said the same thing JUST GET THROUGH IT..........whenever I would say, "but....." I would hear "DONT WORRY. JUST GET THROUGH IT"

so, get through it. DO NOT let OCHEM make you doubt your abilities to be a doctor.

Did I mention, just get through it?

Best of luck

Okay seriously, organic chem and physics have very little to do with medical school. If your school offers anatomy and physiology or a pathophysiology course, that is closer to point.

You will need to have faith in yourself. Medical school is a competitive environment with people expecting to be the best because everyone was to get in in the first place. If you don't have confidence that you belong, you will be miserable and really out of sorts when you fail a test (it happens to almost everyone at one point during medical school) or if you are not at the top of the heap.
