its not official yet but i think that i just failed organic chemistry. does this mean that i am at the end of the road when it comes to dentistry? If i took the class again and managed to get an A would i still have a shot at dental school or should i pack up the circus and move in a different direction?

no, it's not the end of the road, retake it and seriously get an A, i would probably take some upper level science courses and do very well in those too to show that you can handle it (plus it will bring up your science gpa, bc aadsas will count both the F and A)
u should be alright, just reflect back on why you got this F and show that you improved, in addition you also have organic II to shine, then there biochem, microbio, physical chem, and the one that truly counts the DAT, so just keep going

That's is an excellent video. He has completed two degrees by the age of 21... Retake organic and fix the areas that you were deficiet in. Specifically, understand the mechanisms and soforth.
your screen name says "premed" 😀
i know at my sch we can do grade forgiveness where they replace your faling grade for a class with the passing grade when you retake that class, that way the F wont get calculated into your GPA and it wont really matter. But dont give up, just try again and make sure you do you best.
It actually does get calculated into the GPA that matters> AADSAS GPA, and scgools look at it.
Nonetheless, keep motivated and I wish you the best!
👍

👍Have a REAL, valid reason (not an excuse) and it should be fine.
What counts as a real reason? Sometimes people get bad grades because they got sick or had some family problems or something that I would assume counts as a "real reason." But sometimes people get bad grades because they weren't prepared for the courseload or maybe they just messed up. Would schools not forgive the latter situation(s)?

Well not anymore apparently

To go from an "F" to an "A" is a major task.
You have to understand why you got that "F" before you take the class over. Think back: was it lack of studying, the wrong study group, simply not motivated?
It's a whole package deal. Did you get an "F" in this one class and B+ or better in others. Or is this "F" tagged along with some "C's" in the same semester???
No one person on any forum can direct you without looking at the whole deal. For all I know, if you have a 3.4 overall GPA and have one "F", then its no big deal. If you have a 2.9 and an "F", well you might want to look into getting a masters in you want dentistry in your future.

just as you said...a real reason means that would you would have done better...BUT things beyond your control hindered you from doing your best. an excuse is something that you could have done something about at the time but didn't.

Well, I like to think that individuals have a very high self-locus of control. In that, there is always something you could have done - never will there be a situation where things are beyond your control.
So what you may see as a reason, I will most likely still see as an excuse.

I would say that missing a final and therefore not passing the class because you were in a life threatening car accident pretty much counts as a reason....not an excuse.
excuse: i didn't study as much as i should have studied.
reason: i didn't study as much as i should have studied because i was in a medically induced coma.

you're romanticizing the situation. if something was life threatening, you would have been in a hospital and could easily have gotten a doctor's note to rewrite the exam or whatnot.. or in the case of bereavement (which some would argue is a reason), you could get a note for this too... now, why the student didn't get a note.. THAT my friend, is an excuse.

Alright...fine. Missing the point of my obviously dramatized situation I see that you are going to argue with me for the sake of arguing. I'm not going to whip out the "internet forum ruler" so that we can decide the winner.
My point is that there are definitely reasons for bad grades that interviewers sympathize with and there are reasons that they just see as bad judgment on the students behalf.
If its not too late, withdraw from the class and take the W. Its better than pulling an F. Most schools its too lsate for a W but you might as well try.
At my school, failing the class is getting a C-

and once again, what some may feel sympathy for, others may not. depends on where you lie on that spectrum.
and no, this has nothing to do with "being a compassionate person." It's about responsibility.
