i am a reapplicant. i did not receive one interview last cycle. about 10 minutes ago, i lost all hope for this upcoming cycle as well. i just received my spring quarter grades. my overall gpa dropped. i had a 3.19 last cycle, now i have a 3.18. my science was a 2.89 and now it is a 2.92.
i don't know what to do with myself. honestly, i feel like a failure. i am thinking of taking the DAT again, but i'm not sure if i can raise my score. i got a 19/19/18 last time. i don't know what to do. i feel like i should just stop trying. but i don't see myself pursuing anything other than dentistry. i've wanted this for so long.
i wanted to vent.
bye.

I really feel for you. In my case, I'm already in dental school and have found out this is not what I wanted to do; I mean, I'm more book smart and this profession requires the best of your hand skills (and not so much of theory), which, sadly I do not possess.
Situations like yours are why I feel academics for Dental school admission are not the proper way to determine whether you are a good candidate for dentistry or not. I am pretty sure that your hand skills are much much better than mine for dentistry and yet, I'm in and you're not; I really do not understand this. GPA-wise I kick your arse and usually do great on exams and quizzes, but honestly, once you're in dental school, what ultimately stands, are your freaking hand skills, that's what separates the average from the outstanding.

wow teethvader, way to make this person feel worse than he/she really does about the gpa situation. maybe you should learn to phrase things more appropriately.i'm sure this person appreciates your kicking arse comment.

it's true though. maybe he/she needs to hear this.

if the OP cannot imagine doing anything besides dentistry, then i cannot imagine how their GPA is so poor. i believe anyone can do anything if they put their mind to it and it quite clear that the OP has not done this. how are they going to pass their boards?? these are the kinds of questions that the adcoms ask themselves when they see a sub-par GPA.

Now, although the above was pretty harsh, i hope it serves as some motivation to the OP. Look, you need to enroll in a masters program ASAP with the intention of getting a 4.0. think of it as a clean slate...independent of your undergrad career. if you can do this, you WILL do great and WILL get into dental school. 👍

good luck,
WS

Vader if its So bad get out school now, why waste another minute doing something you know you will not succeed at. Add to that another 50,000 dollars or so of debt. Instead of griping about your handskills, go see your instructors and ask them how to work on your handskills.

Hang in there, and don't give that easily. My thinking has always been if your going to become a such respected ind. of society and a high level professional your going to have to go thru some hell. (But it is all worth it in the end, that's what makes going thru hell worth it.)

For example, I was reading of a very successful African American cardiologist who came from the inner city of Detroit from a impoverished poverty background. Today he is one of the leading cardiologists in the U.S.!

I don't know why you've lost ALL hope. Sure your overall went down 1/100, but your sci gpa went up 3/100. So, looking at the big picture it seems like one step backward for three skips forward. And I am sure you can raise your DAT score. People do it everyday. Why can't you? Just because your gpa is lower than average doesn't mean you're not smart. But now is the time to recognize that a high DAT score needs to become a priority. Do ANYTHING necessary to improve your DAT score if you really cannot see yourself in another profession. If you need to quit your job, do it. If you need to drop some classes, do it. If you need to sign up for Kaplan or Topscore or AcetheDAT, or whatever, do it.

But it is up to you. You still have the ability to change and ultimately pursue your ambitions. Its not over yet, so take charge of what you say you want and produce the goods. Its time to stop feeling bad about yourself and get back up on the horse. You can still be a dentist if you make it happen. 🙂

BTW, I think what teethvader had to say was encouraging in a roundabout way.

Exactly. Not sure why you are worrying so much about such a small drop...your science GPA actually improved so be proud. Good luck.

how many schools did you apply to? and which schools?

dont feel to discouraged, if you really want it youll strive for it and make it in.

there is a way to guarantee you a spot at many dental schools. 1st) apply early
2nd) score 21 or higher in the dat. scoring high in the dat will make up for your low gpa.

When did you apply (early or late) and to which schools?

i totally agree. u got ur science gpa up and thats a good thing! it shows that u had the drive to work harder at the sciences. also, i kno it sux but retaking the DAT just may be ur ticket in. i jsut took the DAT and def hafta retake 🙁

you sound very passionate about this profession so dont give up hope. once you get an interview, your passion will show and i believe thats most important. all u gotta do is get past the grades thing to show them that ur numbers are good, cuz unfortunately thats how they weed us applicants out ::Sigh::

GOOD LUCK!

DUDE RETAKE THE DAT!! I had lower scores than you the first time I took it and decided that I needed to retake it. For a whole summer I made it my full time job to study for that bastard everyday. Yeah Id still get crunk and hyphy on the weekends but I just made it a goal of mine to crush it. I went from 17AA/18PAT to 21AA/19PAT. Better yet, when I went on my interviews, they were impressed with how I increased it. It shows determination. If you really want it you'll do whatever the f*uck it takes to do it. Saying you feel like giving up now is bullsh*it because you haven't even entered hell yet which is your first year of dental school.
