Hello everyone and thank u to take time to read my post....
I'm a college student in San Diego, I'm planning to to apply for pharmacy school because I like it a lot. I was planning to apply at Chapman Uni, Western uni, and UCSF because THEY DO NOT REQUIRE A BS degree but for some reason I can't leave my family alone!! I have to be with them at SD and at the same time I know UCSD is a very hard to get in as a pharmacy student plus they require a BS degree which is something I really hate because IT IS WASTING OF TIME AND MONEY!!🙁 right now I'm going to be in my fourth semester at college and my major is microbiology just because it has the same pre-requisites for pharm D, but I DO LIKE IT AS MAIN MAJOR. I'm so confused about what should I do? and there is no can give a good advice so I'm thinking to do nursing ( it has almost all the pre-requisites for pharm D ), but as I said my main goal is pharmacy. I don't know where to start as I need a good paying job while I'm studying pharm and even now. By the way, my gpa is around 3.8 and I'm done with almost all pre-requisites for pharm D program EXCEPT chemistry and I'm good at it. btw i'm 21 yrs.

if you have any advice I'll really appreciate it 🙂

I would suggest getting ur bachelors in nursing that way u have a job while in pharm school. It is a great back up. What if something happens later on and pharmacy is not what u want there isn't much u can do with a microbio degree except lab jobs that pay close minimum.

I am in my 3rd year of the pharmacy program and if your heart is truly in for pharmacy then you should pursue it; otherwise you will do nursing then not enjoy and then return to school for pharmacy ( I say this because I'm in class with nurses as well as lawyers who changed majors to pharmacy)
Good luck!

Computer programming sounds like a much more viable option. You do not even need a degree to become a computer programmer, and it pays fairly well without you having to relocate, take on $200k+ student loans, and spend an additional 4 years in school. You just need to either teach yourself programming, take courses at a community college, or even go to a coding boot camp.

thanks for your reply .. that's exactly what I'm thinking (what if something happen later on ) and I know microbio major doesn't pay that much unless you have MS

Hi there,

I am also a micro major and I'm working currently as a Blood Bank CLS as part of Los Angeles County. I too was in your situation not too long ago, and right after getting my BS in micro I needed to find some work to help my father maintain our house. With just a BS degree in bio it was so hard to find a decent paying job, that was very unexpected for me.

So I took the opportunity to apply to a CLS program while working part time. The CLS program was only 1 year and I already had most of the prerequisites down from my degree, so I went for it and found a job right away(i think I got lucky, because the CLS position is also saturated at the moment, especially in LA) The benefits are incredible for county, the pay is decent, but not to my liking. Now that my family is back on their feet, I started looking into other professions.

My two cents, would be to try and explore other avenues of the healthcare field. There is dental, physician assistance, nurse practitioner, podiatry, etc. Try to do some more research and shadowing if possible before you make a decision. I have heard that nursing school is getting slammed with apps right now, and many of my friends have been put on wait list. I was torn between PA and pharmacy for some time, I explored both, and ultimately chose pharmd for several reasons.

Just open your own pharmacy school

I'm sure the acpe or whatever they are called will accredit you

Why not go out of state. U applying school with highest tuition. Most of school out of state tuition is lower than that. Some of highly respected pharmacy school also do not require bachelor. You just need your pcat.
