Hi everyone. I'm new here and I know questions like this have been asked before but : I recently finished my undergrad degree in psychology (with a 3.5 overall gpa and a 3.75 in my major) but I have an F on my transcript. Its for an art class my freshman year. I plan on retaking it this semester or next, and am currently in the process of applying for post bacc programs for pre-medical students. Is my dream of being a doctor still possible>?

Yes, and if you go the DO route and retake the class, you can take advantage of grade forgiveness which will be a big boost.

I'm open to both MD and DO schools, however, I'm primarily interested in psychiatry as a specialty and I've heard DOs focus more on primary care which I'm less interested in, so I'm not sure what the best decision would be when the time comes. Thanks for the advice tho. If you've got anymore, let me have it ! 🙂

No, if you can't paint a tree in an impressionistic style, then you aren't meant to be a doctor. Surgery is an art.

That's good to know. As I look online, I'm finding so much conflicting info abt this subject. So many ppl say things along the lines of "No if you haven't been a completely put-together flawless person since pretty much birth you can forget abt being a doctor" and other ppl saying "No a few bad grades/choices won't ruin your chances, I'm a med student and I flunked a semester but overcame it with a high MCAT and a great personal statement" etc, its just hard to know who to believe... And if I'm going to devote the time/effort/money to do 1-2 yrs in a post bacc program I want to make sure its worth it!

I flunked a swimming class in college, that's why I had to go to a DO school 🙁

Hummmm. Got an F in an art class and you want to be a psychiatrist? What will you say when your patients bring you copies of their Rorschach test?

wait... you actually got an F based on how bad your photographs were? and not some attendance/ test score issue?
No it was actually do to a lot of personal problems I had going on in my life at the time as well as a conflict with the professor. Also, I was much younger and much more careless about the consequences of my actions than I am now as an adult.

But my photos really sucked too lol. I just didn't have a knack for it at ALL.

To the original poster, I think you'll be fine. It might elicit a chuckle during an interview if you said you had an interest in plastic surgery instead of psychiatry though. 😉 We wouldn't want your patients looking like this:

(Forgive my attempt at dry humor.)

can we see some pictures? it will give us a better representation of your medical school application.

I have to say that this thread restores some of my faith in the good-natured-ness of SDN. Seems like every time someone new asks a "I did [insert something that likely has no bearing on my med school acceptance] am I totally screwed and have to give up my dream of being a doctor?" they get totally attacked. My comment was the bitchiest one and it wasn't even that bad 🙂
