Hi all!

What are my chances of getting into med school with C- in general chem II and D in O-chem I. However, I have A in General chem I, A in Bio I and B in bio II. I also took calculus I as Pass/Fail (I passed). I still need to take Physics. I have done pretty well in my other classes, the only problem so far has been chemistry. Thank you!

Retake them. If you do poorly in it then you will have a hard time on the MCAT.

What is your sGPA and cGPA?

Very common question. See my signature

Retake and do better in upper-level courses... I.e. get an A

Either retake and get A's or don't bother applying. Being super serial here

You need to retake them both and calculus 1 as P/F will not satisfy medical school's requirement for 1 year of math.

If you are not giving constructive advice, please don't post. I don't think you can say "don't bother applying" when you don't know my extracurricular activities.

Yeah you need to retake calc 1. Schools don't accept P/F for prereqs as far as I know.

Edit: Actually, I guess it depends. If you're going to take Calc II and Stats graded then you'll be able to satisfy one year math requirements.

What if OP has other Math courses prior to taking Calc I, Like algebra etc.. ???

Sure that would probably make up for one other math class but a decent amount of schools (at least as of two years ago) want to see at least a semester of calculus. Which means OP would still need to take one graded semester of calculus and I'm not sure why you'd take Calc I P/F if you thought you were gonna blow away Calc II.

sGPA is 2.98 and cGPA is 3.9. Thank you

Well, seeing as worse than a C would not meet the prereq requirement, I think it is pretty safe to say that a C- in one, a D in another, and a P in yet another REQUIREMENT is sufficient reason to tell you "fix it or don't bother." Harsh? Maybe. Realistic? Totally. Your ECs are a moot point until that sGPA is above a 3.5-3.6 (unless you are URM, then a 3.2-3.4).

You're not doomed but I'd retake and be sure you are OK with osteopathic school. FWIW I got into a good DO school with a C- that I didn't retake nor did it ever even come up but I think most adcoms are going wonder (and you should as well) why you got a D in Ochem I and a C- in gen chem and why that won't happen in medical school.

How is a 2.98 sgpa and a 3.9 cgpa even possible given that OP has already taken a decent amount of science classes. Even if you were a senior and you only had a few more classes to take, are those stats even possible assuming a normal # of classes per semester?

You're assuming that OP has taken "a decent amount of science classes"... ie op took about 2. Taking more and retakes will soar the sGPA

More importantly, why did you get a C- and D-? What is wrong with your study strategy? These as questions you should at least think about before retaking

This^. You will need to retake these courses somehow, and OWN them. It's impossible unless you raise that sGPA. But remember, thats BCPM. If you can't get the sGPA above at least a 3.4, you will need to look at DO schools (not a bad thing). Again, as someone else mentioned, getting good grades on retakes is crucial; it will lead to success on MCAT and your sGPA.

Bluto385 was giving you constructive advice. I don't agree with the specifics of it (I think if you retake and get B+s instead of A's you're probably still fine), but I agree with the general idea. I doubt adcoms will care what extracurricular activities you did if you can't get high grades in foundational classes. No school will take you if they doubt your ability to handle the material, no matter how strong you are in other areas. A lot of people have accidental C's and D's on their transcript. They prove those are accidents by retaking those classes and doing well in them.

Retake them, of course. For Calc, have you taken stats? If so, I'd just move on to Calc 2 and get an A in it (or, if you're from TX, just keep Stats, as that's all you'll need for math).

I took stats with a letter grade! I am not sure when I will take calc II. So, I think math requirement is fulfilled. 🙂

Yes, I took stats! I talked with my advisor and she said I have math requirements fulfilled. Thanks a lot!

I understand his point, but I don't think it was the best way to put it.

I am very sorry guys, I was looking at AO GPA which is 3.9. Now cGPA is 3.51. Sorry 🙁

How did you learn in O-Chem I? That was a very unique class. I literally had no idea what I was doing initially because our professor didn't show us electron pushing. I barely passed the class. When I took the second sequence with a different professor, he laid out the electron pushing in a very clear manner. This literally caused me to do a 180 in the class. I went from dreading O-Chem to falling in love with it. For some people, it's the class that makes no sense until it clicks.

Gen Chem II just plain sucked.

I took Pre-calc and stats with letter grade. Calc I was the only P/F

I should say I understood the point of the mechanisms, but when it came to do it on the test, I just couldn't. My former advisor once told me I suffered from anxiety, but honestly that only happens with chemistry classes.

There are people in my class now who have test anxiety, and it became particularly bad during our Gross Anatomy exams and practicals. They went to their physician, discussed it, received their current treatment, and said they are performing significantly better as a result.

Hi all!

Haha I just wrote a blog on this topic. If I were you, I would retake the course. Find out what went wrong and how you can fix it. Getting a C on your transcript is not going to ruin your chances of getting into medical school. Having said that, a C- and a D is not so great even with the As and Bs in gen chem and gen bio.

retake and take advantage of D.O medical school grade replacement

Retake both classes. Get "A" in each and an "A" in O.Chem 2. If you fail to do that, you should re-consider careers.
