Hey guys,

I am a sophomore at a small catholic university in Illinois. I have been doing decent up until now with my pre-recs(all Bs and one B+) I took Bio 1 & 2 Chem 1 & 2 all with no real big problem. I just took orgo I and it didn't work out great. I had alot of personal problems at home and a bad teacher so I ended up failing the class. One thing is I can retake and the old grade will be replaced with an R followed by the new grade. I should get an A next time I retake it seeing as I had a good understanding of everything. I have a messed up rotation now that I can't take Orgo II this spring. I was to take physics next fall and try to tackle the beast(Mcat0 in spring of 2007. do you think physics will be too tough to take in the summer so I can take orgo in its place next year? Is physics more difficult than organic chem? Also do you think it's ok to retake the first semester of orgo with the same teacher but take second semester orgo at a junior college or something? I really don't want to take this teacher if I don't have to. I must retake first semester though because it's the only way to hide it on my transcript. It sucks that he is the only professor at my school that teaches it. :scared:

Thanks

It seems to depend on the person; I have found physics easy, while I had to repeat orgo in the summer to get even a B. I have heard the opposite from others.

You might investigate taking orgo at some other local college (a 4 year college or university, not a junior/community college) either in the summer or next school year.

that's an even better idea. Thanks

I do have to take that first semester over at my school with the same professor. It's the only way to get it off of my transcript. And bring my Gpa back up

I think it really depends. I have found physics to be easy too, and I took it over the summer. I did pretty well there. On the other hand, Orgo gave me the biggest headache while I was an undergrad.

I'm sorry to hear about your predicament. Physics versus orgo is completely dependent on the person, I found the former to be much more difficult, but I may be in the minority there. With regards to the "hiding" of the grade, I do not believe this is correct. Your grade will still appear as an F with a classification of R. Only the latest grade, however, will be used to calculate your GPA (for AACOMAS only). Best of luck to you in your endeavors.

I thought it seemed to good to be true also. I do have a friend that retook organic with a D got an A the second time. On his official transcript the original grade is replaced with an R and the new grade was printed next to it. If adcoms see an F on my transcript I can kiss my chances goodbye whether I got an A the second time or not. which would suck...Bad

as long as your science GPA remains respectable and you show you can handle the course during the re-take....you can still get in w/ an F on your transcript...do a search and you'll find some people who got in w/ several F's..

btw I thought physics was tougher then orgo...

I don't think all hope is lost. It seems that you got the poor grades during a rough time in your life. Mention this in your personal statement if you want (and how you learned from it of course), and during the interview if they ask then just explain your situation, we're all human afterall. I actually had 2 D's on my transcript and still got accepted. As for taking your classes over, I'd recommend taking orgo with another professor. It seems to make all the difference...My orgo profraaor was so great that I aced I and II, but got a B in physics. Good luck!

You MUST report all classes you take including repeats to AACOMAS/AMCAS. So there is no honest way to hide the bad grade. I suggest you take it at another school unless you are certain you can manage an A in this professor's class. I took some prereqs at a community college and it was not brought up during interviews yet.

try to get some A's in one of your prereqs. All B's equals a GPA around 3.0

Good luck.

To the OP: Seriously, ask AMCAS directly about your situation. I know that some colleges/universities will do the 2nd chance thing and actually replace your grade (your first one is gone *poof* it never existed) which is good for those with a D or F. It may be that you have to report both grades with an explanation, but find out from the horse's mouth.

Most people at my school take physics in the summer. Take it and move on.

I don't understand the title of your thread.

This is a DO forum. AACOMAS replaces the original grade with any retake.

ACMAS averages both grades.

Thanks OSU -

I am guilty of my weekly blond moment. My head was reeling after switching over from the pre-allo forum (god I hate that place).

I really meant to say AACOMAS, really I did!

This is very true. Also, you seem content with B's. Don't be. 3.0-3.3 is not where you want to be by the time you apply during the summer after junior year. You'll want at least a 3.4 science and overall gpa. Figure out which gen ed classes are the easiest and get into these classes. Then you'll have time to work your ass off in the sciences and get A's. Independent study classes are sometimes easy A's also.

I agree with above that physics was easier than orgo, but it depends on the person and whether you've had high school physics. Your best bet is to take physics soph year and save orgo until junior year. This might be a better strategy anyway so as to keep orgo fresh in your mind for the MCATs. So its definitely not over - good luck.

I would have to disagree. I made A's/B's in organic chemistry and B's/C's in physics. I took physics in high school, and had 2 years of calculus in high school. I took non-calc based physics in college.

I found organic easier because there is no math---just memorization.

I completed AMCAS/AACOMAS applications this summer and had to look up this topic. There is no way around the reporting of any college class that you took whether you withdrew from it, took it in high school, had it forgiven, etc.

AMCAS has the info here:
http://services.aamc.org/AMCAS2005/Help/WebHelp/amcashelp.htm

AACOMAS
you need to start an application and look at the help options.

The OP can give a call as well for peace of mind.

Just as an aside - If you're going to retake Organic - grab the book 'Pushing Electrons' BEFORE you take it. Work the exercises in the chapters until they get to specific reactions then use them as you cover the material.

I had taken both semesters of Orgo, did well and then bought the book because I wasn't satisfied with my understanding of the material. It really
made some things very, very clear. You can get it at used bookstores every now and then.

To the OP: from a broader perspective, keep in mind that applying to med school isn't a race. If you need to spread out your prereqs in order to keep your grades up, then do so. Don't stress about fitting in certain classes or your MCAT within a certain time period. The extra year you spend preparing may be exactly what you need to ensure an acceptance.
