A week ago I shadowed a DO at one of our local hospitals. This hospital has been rated in the top 5% for patient satisfaction. It is a full hospital and the local people often choose it as opposed to another (about three miles apart) because of the great attention, care, and comfort they receive from the physicians and staff.
While I was shadowing my DO friend I saw a poster with the local residents in various specialties (internal med, gen surgery, ortho surgery, ob/gyn, etc, etc, etc). Then I realized they all had "D.O." after their names. That's right - an entire DO hospital (there are a few MDs, too).
I'm pretty sure most people in this area (from conversations I've had) don't understand what D.O. is. I'm pretty sure most of them don't know the doctor providing their care at this hospital is a D.O. and not M.D. And they don't care. They say "doctor" and get great care.
