I have a 260, AOA, and 2 pubs, can I get in?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As anyone on AuntMinnie could tell you, you need a 280, 6 pubs, and a Ph.D. to match in rads. you should pick something easier, like plastics or derm 😉

Couldn't help it... Please read the link below from AM. Hopefully it will give you a clue. If not read my note.

I wish people would stop wasting space on public forums asking questions like this: "I am a genius, can I get into "orthodermoradioplastics". Is it a desire to see your stats on the web and get public "wow" or "you are great"? I can understand when people with average scores asking for advice b/c they try to analyze their chances and get suggestions from others who were in the similar situation. There are people with great step 1 scores and multiple pubs who never get into residency of their choice b/c they are so self absorbed that they have little insight into anything else. This usually shows during interview.
Ghee, I had to vent b/c I am tired of viewing post like this. Yes, rads is competitive but you don't have to have 260 to get in. Do your homework and talk to residents and PD in your school.

couldn't have said it better

no reason to get your panties in a bunch...it's a joke.

I recognize it's a joke, but there really are people like this and what amazes me is that with strong numbers, they still seem too stupid to figure out that they are highly competitive. Maybe it really is a form of bulletin-board narcisism.

It's a really boring and played to death joke. Guess I've been on these boards too long. Goodbye sdn hello radiology!

Depends on what your goals are. If you want to go to Harvard or Hopkins or something along those lines those stats are nowhere near a sure thing or "highly competive".

Why should only the mediocre be allowed insecurities, it's all releative.

I was making fun of AuntMinnie. I guess I should have inflated the stats a little more. 😉

Again, if they're that "USMLE" smart and haven't figured out whether they're competitive for a top program, then I feel sorry for them.

Okay, to take on a more serious tone, I am beginning my first year at medical school this fall. The school is known for training primary care docs, but I think I would like to match in radiology. I don't even know what a 230 on Step I means at this point, so I just need the basics as to what I can do to make myself competitive early on. I'm sure this has been asked and posted several times on SDN, but I can't find it here or on Aunt Minnie.

Keep searching, trust me, it is has been hashed to death on both sites.

*The first thing is to look at your home school. You might be able to get in good enough with them to match there, especially if you start early.
*Start doing research, it'll get you contacts and publications, both of which help.
*Start shadowing radiologists, it'll get you known to the department which can be a plus when you're applying to your home school.
*Study hard for Step 1, doing lots of practice questions. A 230 is probably the min you need to be safe, but you can match with less. You shouldn't put yourself in that situation if you can avoid it though.
*Keep your grades up, obviously.

Mostly common sense but still worth enumerating. Matching in Rads is NOT super-hard (this is most of what I was trying to get at with my tasteless joke). Matching in Rads at MGH is super-hard, but if you just want to be a radiologist and are an above-average student it is definitely possible.

Thanks! I appreciate the simplicity of your answer as well as the motivation. I am not one to ask "What are my chances?" because there is no right answer applicable to everyone. Your advice, however, is helpful and gives me a starting place. I was surprised to see that my school had 3 matches in Radiology among 60 students despite its reputation for primary care.
