Hi guys, o.k first and foremost I'm stupid because I just finished my secondaries and handed them in a week ago! yeah yeah I know.... secondly my MCAT score is as follows: 7,10,10,Q that 7 is going to kill me (its in verbal).

So I've come to the conclusion that I just want one interview so I can see what its like and apply again for next year in JUNE!!!!! but I am going to redo my MCAT in April, **** I hate verbal! I studied so loooong for it! what happened?!?!?!?!

Anyone in the same situation....

(oh my GPA is 3.50)

Hello fellow Torontonian! (I was born and raised in Toronto and now residing in the US).

My heart kinda goes out to you because I know how tough those Canadian med schools (or even the US schools as an international applicant) can be to get into. I also had a lot of trouble with the verbal while studying for it last year for the April 2002 MCAT. I was scoring 7-9 in the practice tests and so naturally I was really nervous about how I would do on the real deal. Some advice that people give is to go out and read a lot of difficult material and try to understand it. That's find and good if you've been doing that anyway for many years, but I found that I could not use that strategy for the time given to study. What I used to do was read the passages as deeply and carefully as possible, making mental notes of things (also underlining with a pencil) that seemed to carry the flow of the article. Then I would read the question and go back and reread the relevant information. This is a very time consuming process and so for me the trick was to balance deep reading with speed. I never for a moment trusted my memory, I would always go back to check. Everytime I thought I knew the answer without looking again, it was usually my mind inferring something incorrectly.

I don't know, this is what worked for me. I got a 10 which alright I guess by SDN standards, but amazing for me!

Ocean11: rewriting's not a bad idea, although I wouldn't totally write off this application cycle. LOTS of students struggle with Verbal, and since American schools don't have a cut-off per se (as do those Ontario schools), you still have a chance. The key is getting the interview and showing them how great you are. 🙂 Best wishes.

You may still have a chance. There was a person on SDN last year who did not even turn in her AMCAS application until the last possible day and she received something like 6 interviews in early March. Her Verbal was a little higher than yours, but her science scores were lower. My applications were not complete until the middle of October and early November so I am kind of in the same boat that you are. So, maybe there is hope for us yet!

I may be wrong, but I think that a lot of late interview slots will start to open up once people start getting accepted to their top choice schools. A lot of people just are not going to spend the money to go to interviews when they are no longer really interested in the school. At least, I hope so anyway.
