When can we start another PHARMCAS for 2011?

I'm currently a Xavier Pre Pharm student. I'm planning to apply to Xavier and 5 other pharm school this summer for class of 2011.

Here's my status: (Give me some feedbacks)

General Chem I (lecture) A
General Chem I (lab) A
General Bio (lecture) B
General Bio (lab) B
Pre Calculus A
English I A
Biomed Ethics A
Physchology A
Anatomy and Physiology I (lecture) A
Anatomy and Physiology (lab) B
Spanish (elective) A
Organic Chem I (lecture) C+
Organic Chem I (lab) C+
Theology C
Philosophy C

Experiences:
-Volunteer at hospital I (October 2008-December 2008)
-Volunteer at hospital II (January 2009-present)
-Red Cross (September-present)
-ACS Chemistry club member

This spring 2010 I'm planning to take Gen Chem II lab+lecture, Gen Bio II lab+lecture, Calculus, English II. Macroeconomics and PCAT in the summer. And Physics, Organic Chem lab+lecture II, Microbiology, and Public Speaking in Fall 2010.

Am I on the right track? Thanks for the feedbacks.

Hey, don't let people tell you if you are on the right track or not. You should be able to make your own judgement on your performance. Also, have confidence on yourself and your ability to be independent on making decision for your life. I am telling you this because as in pharmacy school, you are on your own, no one will tell you what to do, what to study for. So learn it from now, and it will benefit you in a long run.

You are on the right track. Consider taking Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Statistics if you can before applying to pharmacy school.

How did you take Orgo without finishing Gen Chem first? 😕

Consent from the professor or the department chair.

I took Organic w/o the 2nd quarter of General Chemistry, as Crazybob noted, with consent from the professor / chair of college or department. Usually an "A" in the class and an LoR from the Gen Chem I professor to the Orgo professor suffices. Seen it a number of times, since Orgo really has nothing to do with General except the "chemistry" part of the name.

The application cycle this year opened June 4th. I am assuming it will be the same next year. Remember, the earlier you apply the better! So try to have all of your things done asap.

Thanks a lot guys for the replies. 🙂

I think it's cool that no one has bashed you for making C's in o-chem, B's in bio, and what not. On a premed board you'd be chastised to no end. Premeds are d***heads.

O Chem can be a bitch of a class and made even worse so by a poor professor. As long as you get over a C, I call that good in my book

I'm fine with it too. It's the premedos out there that think it's taboo.

It sucked because I loved O Chem. The exams were hard as hell though. I ended up getting C's in both 1 and 2, but rocked the labs with A's

I'm guessing for pharmacy school that it's ok to do that.

Cs are ok im sure, but I won't be satisfied with them. I have to approach the material differently. Probably experiment to find out what works for me.

Let's be clear: C's are ok when they are few and in legitimately hard classes. One thing I like about pharmacy school admissions is that typically, they see that a C in a tough class may not correlate in any way to your ability to help patients. In saying that, a strong academic record DOES correlate with your ability to get through the tougher classes in the pharm school curriculum.

I agree that the C+ in orgo I isn't a dealbreaker, but if I were you I'd make SURE I got in the B range or better for orgo II. From what I understand orgo is one of the classes most looked at in admissions as far as individual classes go.

I think you're right. Orgo II = MUCH more fun, though. I think it is easier to excel when you truly enjoy the material. However, with orgo, I think it becomes more of a time issue. When you cram that much information into a semester that might already be loaded up with other tough classes or working part-time or full-time, it becomes that much harder. I mean, think about how many reagents and "rules" you had to learn about in orgo II. I felt so accomplished after that class!

I got C's in both orgo 1 and 2 and I was fine. Junior year was horrible for e and I was able to explain it in my supplementals.

How do you guys feel about taking organic chem I and physics I in the same semester - two courses I've never even come close to studying before. Likely, I'd probably take a random bio course too, but I've always been good with bio and took seven or so of them in undergrad for electives.

I anticipate doing that schedule next fall and reading Physics for Dummies and Org Chem for Dummies beforehand. The dummy books have given me an excellent review of gen. chem.

I found physics to be INCREDIBLY easy. Didn't study once for Physics I and passed with an A

Agreed- Physics I was a breeze. But, I found the labs to be long and boring. O-chem I was pretty easy, too (I think). You will probably be fine taking them together.

Physics II, when you start getting into capacitors and stuff requires a bit more thinking. Overall though, it's really not bad.

Good to know. Thanks.

If you take regular physics and not calculus-based physics, it should be easy. I took calculus-based physics after two year of physics in high school, so I thought it was easy, but I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't had physics before.

As for organic chem, you just have to keep studying until a lot of it makes sense to you and you can memorize the reactions and mechanisms involved.

Ummm isn't genchem 2 an actual prereq and schools won't accept you if you haven't completed it? It's clearly listed as a prereq, so I wouldn't think an LOR would suffice (though I could be wrong).

Also, what about bio 2? I'm sure you plan on taking that as well, right?

It is.

The OP did say that he/she plans to do so in the spring and the fall.

Can they(the pharmacy school) tell you got the C+, not a C itself when looking at your record?
I have no idea if a C+ and a C itself can make the difference.

I think its insignificant. They will know because when you enter grades onto PharmCAS, you are required to enter the exact grade as it appears on your transcript. So if your on a plus/minus system then you will enter it as is.

Thanks. I don't know about the PharmCAS yet. Do I have to go there first/before I send out the application to my Pharmacy schools?

Yeah. I am assuming your applying for 2011 admissions? If so then you have to wait til June before you can open a PharmCAS account. Check out the site now to get a good idea of the things you need for the application. Also, browse around this site for more information regarding the application process. You dont want to get flamed for asking continuously repeated questions.
