I got into a discussion with someone who believes that all modern medical advancements are (in her words) stupid, useless, and ineffective. According to her, nobody in her family uses vaccinations or antibiotics and all of them live well into their 90's. She did not understand me when I told her that anecdotal evidence is not enough to convince me (or most of the scientific community for that matter) that she was on to something. She proceeded to tell me that she also thought science was a waste of human time and we should put our efforts elsewhere. Then she turned around and continued typing away on her computer, which I had to remind her was a technological advancement - a product of science.

I noticed myself continuing to become personally offended by her opinions even after our talk. Science is literally my religion. However, I must be the dumbest person in the world to endorse procedures that have nearly doubled life expectancy in the last 200 or so years. According to her, keeping people alive beyond 40 is not an accomplishment because she claims people are miserable after that age. Yet, she brags about her family's impressive longevity in the same breath.

I know I am totally wasting my time and energy with this post. I'm just so irritated by the whole situation.

Has anyone else encountered individuals like this? If so, how did you go about dealing with them?

TL;DR - I need therapy.

If you're going to get this upset over stupid people, I question your ability to endure the medical profession.

Let her be? You can't change everyone's mind and people are free to believe whatever they want.

Those people put our civilization at risk of going back into dark ages.

I really get annoyed by anti-vaccine people.

But OP you should have figured out that she's just ignorant when she said science is useless and people shouldn't be living past 40.

Yes there are other like this out there. They will hold there beliefs until they get a serious infection and will begging for antibiotics or they or their child get measles and demand a doctor give them medicine to get rid of it. You have to put your frustrations aside. You cannot convice people like them to think otherwise no matter how much research you show them. you will have patients like this. all you can do is present them with current information and document you educated them and they still refused x,y,z. be sure to document this so that if their child gets sick and dies from a preventable disease, they cannot come back and say you didn't tell them all the risks.
