I have zero research experience. Is there any way to do it online, especially now with the virus situation? I prefer this.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sure, a lot of clinical research can be done from the comfort of home. That being said, pretty sure you won’t be able to find any of these opportunities right now with the coronavirus going on. Good luck!

The top 20 schools still like to see research. Schools are looking for "good hands", some familiarity with some bench techniques, and a familiarity with the scientific method. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate teamwork. (These things will be mentioned in a letter from the head of the lab who is known as the "principal investigator" (PI).)

There is research that is done as a secondary data analysis but you have to develop skills in data analysis. You could learn some of these skills at home but it is unlikely that anyone will be available to mentor you through a project during this crisis.

Some forms of data analysis can be done online/remote/at-home, but it depends on the specific research project you are working on.

I can assure you there is no shortage of research work that needs to be done. Try emailing various professors/researchers.

Please don't embarrass yourself by listing this as research on your application. It merely uses your computer's unused capacity to run models.

To be fair successfully installing GROMACS to use CUDA should be enough to earn your PhD in Quantum Physics.
