I'm a freshman. Last semester, I got a B in gen chem (we only have gen chem, it's not split up). I got an A- in bio lab. I'm pretty sure I'm about to get a B in chem lab. I'm probably going to end up with a B in stats.

Honestly, should I give up on medical school?

Hey, I had a few B's in the beginning! And this semester/year ( I'm a soph) I have almost all A's! You can do it@
You don't need a 4.0 for med school, ntm trend in grades is soo important that you freshman grades are minimally important.

You're a freshman you have a lot of time to pull up your gpa + managing to get As in upper level sciences could definitely show mastery in the subject. Got a B in chem lab (it was absolutely ridiculous for one credit) and a B+ in chem I, and not doing too hot in chem II (lab was easier lol). That being said all the sciences I've taken have my sGPA still >3.8 despite those blunders.

After freshman year I had a 3.2 and a W. After that I decided I wasn't going to settle for Bs anymore. I retook the W over the summer and got an A, then continued to get above at least a 3.7 every semester from then on. Now I'm standing on a good GPA and great MCAT.

It's not meant to be a brag but to show you that it is possible to improve. I was in the same exact place freshman year. Literally after every gen Chem test I reconsidered medicine (my first exam I got a 28 btw, an F even with the curve lol).

No you shouldn't give up. Push yourself and see how you can turn that B into an A- at the very least. It's possible. Read MD2020's guide on sub-par STEM students. That should help greatly.

^ OP isn' sub par! Just not quite up to med schools standards yet!

The guide doesn't have to be for sub-par stem students. You should read it, it has a lot of useful information. The individual who created the thread received an II from Harvard lol.

This is what it takes to get into medical school.

Sorry to ask such a stupid question, but what's the differences between being sub-par and not meeting standards yet? Is it just different outlooks?

There really isn't. That's the point.

You've received solid advice though. Your career is far from toast.

My chem department was really tough on grades (average final grade in all of my classes was a C, no curve). I got a B- in analytical chemistry. That one hurt. Then I worked my butt off, got a B in Orgo I, B+ in Orgo II. Ouch. Tripled down, got an A in biochem. Hello upward trend! Then I started taking biology classes, loved them and I got an A in every single bio class I took. I wouldn't worry about it. Find your science niche, then take a bunch of classes to boost your GPA. Work your butt off. Mine wound up to be 3.8+ (thanks, biology!). Don't worry about it, you're doing fine. Just figure out what works for you.

Dude NOOOOO. Relax. The thread title alone makes me chuckle cuz it displays the paranoia and neuroticism on this site.

I took my first quarter bio class freshman year P/NP and guess what? I didn't pass! so there's a big NP on my transcript next to my first ever attempt at biology. Of course, I buckled down and retook the class and passed with flying colors, but don't get bogged down on by a couple of grades. The key is to regroup and prove that you can handle setbacks by performing better in the future. You're gonna do great! Getting B's is not bad, don't beat yourself up so much! Just get A's from now on lol.

(edit: grammar)

Pre-med neuroticism at its finest 😀.

Persistence + Consistency = 98% of the battle.
You got some time before having to worry about admissions. Study hard, keep at it, and you will be fine 👍.

I had a 2.7 freshman year and a 3.0 sophomore year and I came away with multiple MD acceptances by getting my act together (but it was a tough uphill climb). I wouldn't give up, but figure out how to get those A-'s and A's from here on out. Most need to play around with different study strategies at the beginning of UG.
