Hey everyone,

I'm a first year university student majoring in Biological Science. So basically, last semester I went crazy with this whole new freedom of no attendance, and I ended my first bio course with an F, calculus with a B-, Psych with a C+ and chem with a C+ as well. I'm doing much better this semester and I'm taking bio, astronomy, chem, and Spanish. I completely turned my whole game plan around and I'm striving for good grades. I wish I could go back in time and re do my courses with this attitude I have now. I just feel hopeless now like I won't get into opt school cause of my poor grades last semester. I'm planning to retake my last semester courses to get better grades. Will this help?

Also, do any of you know that if I repeat a course that is a pre-req will the higher grade be used? And when schools consider applicants, do they just consider ur gpa on pre reqs and your OAT scores ? or is there something else ?

I hope I still have a chance...🙁

You still have a chance. Retake these courses that you didn't do so well on. Ace all your new classes.

You very much still have a chance (a very good chance in fact)...Good thing you caught your mess quite early. Now you have to stop thinking you don't have a chance, coz that will only create an excuse in your mind for having bad grades in the future. One thing I will say though is retake those courses, and try acing them as much as u can. This way, you can take exactly the reasons you just gave, to the admission committees, and it should not count against you in the end, if they see good improvements from now henceforth. Good luck man👍

As for using your new grades on a retake, I should think they will use the grades from the retake, but u will still be asked bout odd grades....so...pick up your boot straps now.

J Robert Oppenheimer tried to poison his mentor in grad school and was caught. He only goes on to direct the Manhattan Project. The mentor he tried to poison would go on to win a Nobel.

You've got a lot of time and there are many second chances.

Calm down, take a breath. Numerous people have been in your situation before. I know it took me a year or so to adjust to studying and adapting to college life.
As long as you start improving your grades, you should be fine.
Some schools specifically looked for trends in your college career. Aim for a positive one!

I would suggest not cramming too many classes just because you have to retake some. It's ok to take an additional semester before you graduate, good luck

At my university (and I would assume that most are like this, but I really don't know), there are a couple options for repeating a class. Here, everyone gets two "repeat/forgives", meaning that each student gets to retake a class and have the original grade completely forgiven (the first grade is NOT incorporated into your official GPA, but it is still documented in your transcript). After someone has used both, the remaining option is to average the initial grade with the repeat grade. However, since the original grade remains on your transcript, I would guess that regardless of what your official GPA says, the two grades would be averaged when they officially calculate your grade.

With the new centralized application system, I don't know how this works, but for many of the schools I applied to, the GPAs were self-disclosed (meaning you had a teeny bit of wiggle room to use the higher of two grades if two courses both fulfill the same pre-requisite). For example, I changed majors after 3 semesters and because of departmental drama/politics, I had to take physics twice. So, when asked for my physics pre-requisite, I just gave them the higher grade.
